Cyclicle is the ethos behind Anneliese and Joey, two paramedics in their mid 20’s cycling the world from London to Australia. They hope to raise awareness and funds to advance research for all neurological diseases.
As the cycle of seasons repeats, our bodies and minds slowly change and develop, usually for the better. Neurological disorders interrupt this process, causing rapid deterioration of health, body and mind in otherwise healthy people. For many sufferers, there is no cure. The Brain Foundation Australia is dedicated to funding world-class research into neurological disorders, brain disease and brain injuries. The charity funds merit-based, ground breaking research projects that aim to advance diagnoses, treatment and patient outcomes. The goals and vital research conducted by the Brain Foundation lie very close both families who have felt the devastating effects of these diseases.
Joey’s Pop Neville suffered a rapid progression of motor neurone disease (MND) in early retirement after living an otherwise healthy and robust life. MND is a universally fatal neurodegenerative disease with no known cure. More than 2000 people in Australia are affected by MND with the average life expectancy from diagnosis of only 2.5 years. Within nine months of initial symptom onset, Neville’s health deteriorated to a point where he couldn’t speak nor swallow. After a series of disease related falls he passed away, unable to enjoy the freedom he had worked for through his life.
The Brain Foundation’s mission to advance diagnoses, treatment and patient outcomes also lies close to Anneliese’s heart. Anneliese lost her father in 2014 after he suffered a sudden catastrophic haemorrhagic stroke. Dr Gerald Wong was a much loved husband, father and grandfather working full time as a GP and still enjoyed a weekly hit of tennis. Anneliese’s family have also experienced the effects of Huntingtons disease, a progressive degenerative inherited disease that affects the nervous system. Extensive research is still required to find a cure.
The Brain Foundation relies on the generosity of individuals, corporate donors and bequests only. 100% of your donation goes to the research programs. Your support will make a difference – now and for generations to come. Please give here!
