The Long Ride Home

My old high school friend, Shane, has decided to ride from Perth to Canberra on a recumbent bicycle from the 3rd of August 2018. Crazy. Yes. Will I be assisting? Yes. I will drive Shane from Canberra to Perth, where he'll be making his own way back with his dad as "support crew".

Shane's an Australian army veteran who's served his country with distinction. I decided it would be a shame for such a monumentally crazy ride to go unnoticed and without a link to charity. After all, nothing screams "charity" more than a "big boned" middle aged man riding a recumbent bike across the Nullarbor plain.

Shane, an army colleague of his, and I thought about charities to support -- particularly charities that do tremendous work with our veterans -- and it was decided to support Legacy and The Salvation Army. Both charities well known and respected in the veteran community.

I'm hoping that Shane will update this site and give a lucid account of his ride on a regular basis. I'm also sort of hoping that he'll be fending off circling vultures as he cycles between water stops, so we'll see what happens!

For myself, I've never been in the Forces, but friends and relatives have, and I believe that never has the need been so great to support those people who put their lives on the line so that we may have ours.

So there you have it. I'm also hoping to film and blog at least part of it over the coming weeks to gain a little more coverage.
