We are 4 brothers competing in the race together. Aside from the personal and collective challenge of an endurance horse race, we're doing it for our uncle and Father Rob Bell, who suffers from MS and is wheelchair bound.
When Rob was younger, he was a fine horseman and an excellent rider. He used to dream of doing a safari on horseback, or another similar horse bound adventure.
Every day, Rob struggles with the simplest of tasks. Brushing his teeth is a chore. Driving is impossible and yet, his determination and positivity are truly astounding. We knew we couldn't undertake an ordinary ride, or a mediocre fundraiser. It had to be something big.
When we learned about The Mongol Derby, we knew we had to do it. We are all accomplished riders, and yet this adventure will take us out of our comfort zone. We'll be riding across a country we've never been to, competing in an event that very few people have even heard of, let alone can comprehend. In its 10th year, only 300 people have attempted the Derby, with only 50% completing the race.
It's a challenge worthy of our uncle, our dad. We're riding for him.
