I am joining with a group of 15 Cairns women to support Christina Lee (pictured with Batase students) raise enough funds to build the first library in Batase Village, Nepal. This project is in collaboration with Libraries Without Borders (Paris, France), Friends of Himalayan Children (Cairns, Australia) and the Australian National University (Canberra, Australia). You and I will play a small part in making this happen! SOME FACTS: *40% of adults in Nepal are illiterate. 57% live on less than $2 per day, and more than half live without electricity. *Human trafficking is heavily present in Nepal due to poverty, lack of awareness and access to information. *Batase village is an especially high-risk traffic zone due to its proximity to Kathmandu. *Every day more than 54 young girls and women are trafficked out of Nepal and into India to enter a life of slavery. *Lack of education, illiteracy and poverty are the biggest causes of human trafficking as these people are most vulnerable to misinformation and manipulation. But a LIBRARY can change this situation. HOW? By tackling the real root of the issue of human trafficking by providing access to information and education through a 21st century library. We aim to decrease vulnerability by providing access to essential information through a digital library, higher quality educational support and the opportunity to show that the only idea that the vulnerable know of which they perceive as reality is NOT THE TRUTH. And as a result, we aim to break the cycle of human trafficking in remote villages of Nepal. More Reasons Why Batase Needs a Library • Illiteracy is a huge problem and why students drop out of school • There is no library in Batase and the closest library is in Kathmandu (which takes a two-day hike, or a 3-5 hour 4WD drive) • There is no newspaper access in the village • There is no internet access in the village school at the moment • There is no sufficient study space in the village WHAT ARE THE FUNDS FOR? Total estimated cost of project: $10,000 for library equipment and $5,000 to upgrade the library building (previously a shed used to distribute goods post the earthquake in 2016). My Contribution? I aim to raise $750, with your help! Deadline of fundraising: August 2018 • Upgrading and remodeling of the current shed • Furniture in the library – desks, chairs, carpet, etc. • E-library: customisation and creation of the KoomBook (innovative tool created by Libraries Without Borders) • Creation of human trafficking awareness videos • Contents of the library – tablets, books, board games • Shipping of KoomBook to Australia from France • Transportation of KoomBook and materials from Australia to Batase, Nepal • Sponsoring the librarian • Training the librarian • Providing electricity in the library Libraries are places where the poorest and most underserved people can broaden their horizons, transform their lives and build social capital. They are places of creativity and living laboratories of democracy that offer incomparable access to information, education and culture. In that sense, they are key spaces for the future, and the development of the human race and of our societies. - Libraries Without Borders The teachers and students of Batase have repeatedly exclaimed that ‘to have a library will be a dream come true’. Now it is up to us! Namaste, we made it! I am now writing to you after after a safe and successful trek into Everest Base Camp and back. The women I was trekking with were strong, but the young women guides and porters, along with their male counterparts were even stronger. The young people greatly value the opportunity to work and learn, and are managing the trekking in conjunction with their education - they were encouraging and inspiring. You can watch more about our Base camp visit here: https://www.facebook.com/abcfarnorth/videos/316855682425944/?t=9 I thank you for your generous contributions towards the Batase school library ($1,314), and encourage you to follow Friends of Himalayan Children on social media to keep abreast of the library developments. I am also greatly humbled by your support - many, many thanks.

Namaste supporters, with ten sleeps to go until we fly off to Nepal, I am a mixture of excited and nervous energy! We have been fundraising, training, researching and preparing for 8 months, and now the trip is almost upon us. You have all been an important part of the journey through your generous financial support and encouragement to keep training. A special thanks to Dave and Lachlan for their support as I came home late after training, or was away on weekends climbing mountains. My favourite training events have been when Dave and/or Lachie have joined me :). Thank you for helping me raise $1,254 for the Library in Batase. Together with the amazing group of women I am travelling with (some of whom are photographed here) we have raised over $15,000 to establish the 21st Century Library for Batase village! I am truly grateful, and look forward to sharing pictures of the school and village in Batase, which we will visit before the trek proper begins. Dhanyabad friends, Michelle

Hello supporters of the Batase School Library, It is now less than 4 weeks until I fly to Nepal with my dear friend and hiking partner, Angela Lauder. There we will meet the other women hiking to Everest Base Camp. Your support has been pooled with the donations of the other 18 women hikers (some of whom are pictured here, photo 26.8.18), and we have now exceeded our group target of $10,000! Thank you so much for your generosity. There is still much to be done to prepare the library building for the Koombook from Libraries Without Borders, so if someone you know would still like to support the Batase village School, the kitty is still open. With gratitude, Michelle PS If you would like to read more about how the Koombook is enabling change in Central African Republic, you can visit: https://www.librarieswithoutborders.org/eight-koombooks-implemented-in-learning-facilities-in-central-african-republic/

Hello supporters, the countdown is on! We now only have 6 weeks until we set off for Nepal, and I am excited! To prepare, we have been doing long mountainous hikes, short fast walks and anything else we can to get us into oxygen debt and get us prepared! This morning, I had the privilege of joining our co-leader Susan Devitt and fellow hiker and ABC radio presenter/producer Fiona Sewell in the ABC Far North studio where we talked with Kier Shorey about why we are fundraising - for the 21st Century Library in Batase village, Nepal! Please keep sharing the news about our trip - and thank you for your ongoing support.

Greetings all, I am writing with updates on trekking preparations and fundraising progress. The trekking prep is going well, with regular Sunday morning hill walks with fellow female trekkers here in Cairns. I have also had fabulous family support, including on a recent ascent of Mt Yarrahappini in NSW and a rock-hop up to Spring Creek Falls here in Far Nth Qld (pictured). Planing to move it up a gear and do some all day/overnight hikes soon! Exciting news on the fundraising front - due to a generous donation this week from Granny and Grandad Mac, we have now raised more than $1,000! These funds go directly to the 21st Century Library for Nepal - thank you all. I will continue to fund raise until I leave for Nepal in September, so this is not the end... :)

We have a winner!! On Saturday night our wonderful trek organiser Susan Devitt (www.takeonnepal.com.au) drew the winning ticket for a beautiful basket fill of locally made Nepali treasures. Susan and Som Tamang had generously donated the goods from their Cairns store, Himalayan Dreams. The winning ticket had been purchased by Dave from D'Lish, our cafe at James Cook University, Cairns. I delivered the basket today - as you can see it was smiles all round :) A huge thanks to Dave and everyone who participated in the raffle. Together you have helped raise over $100 to add to funds that will help build the 21st century library at Batase village in Nepal. We are all winners :)

I am truly humbled by the generous support of family, friends and colleagues as we work towards building a library at the Batase Hostel, in partnership with Libraries Without Borders and the Friends of the Himalayan Children. Due to your incredible contributions, I have now surpassed the required $500 I need to contribute to participate in the trek in Nepal and we are well on the way to reaching my goal of raising $750 - thank you! You will see from the photo that we are not taking this challenge lightly - the pic above is a few of the all-girl crew who trained last Sunday ... and we will continue to flex both our physical and fundraising muscles :) with gratitude, michelle
