Lisa Barrett is a midwife in South Australia who has been charged with manslaughter after the death of a baby at home . I believe this is a first in Australia . Her house was raided in the morning and she was taken by the police in handcuffs. Lisa is a strong voice for the choices of women to birth with whom and where they want to birth. Women choose homebirth because the research overwhelmingly tells us that the experience for women in the hospital system leaves many damaged. They are often bullied into making decisions based on fear and ignorance. Babies die in hospital too but usually a financial settlement silences it becoming public.obstericans still stay in practise. Lisa , as many midwives have,has stood up to this. She is now being charged for the death of a baby. Babies die in hospitals too but NO Obstserican has been treated this way.Medical indemnity ensures this and midwives have been obstructed fro getting this. I realise the death of a baby raises enormous emotion and grief. I know this personally, publicly and professionally. However until this court case is over she is innocent and she has a family who are suffering. I am appealing to the humanity in midwives, women and families. We are a family of midwives and midwife means “with women”and this women who has helped many women, is suffering in no way that a medical professional would. The prosecution requested no bail which the judge did not agree to. This is the new form of witch hunting and has happened to a list of at least 20 midwives previously. WE NEED TO STAND TOGETHER. THIS COULD HAPPEN TO ANY MIDWIFE. IN or OUT of HOSPITAL THERE FOR THE GRACE OF GOD GO ANY OF US. THE SOLUTION IS NOT TO TURN OUR BACKS. Please if you are having a cup of coffee today give the equivalent or more if able. Her family need it. I am sending this out with kindness and love and because Lisa needs “ with women” now and until the court case is complete she is still innocent, regardless of any media speculation.
