Darren’s Story
Darren Vernede survived many challenges, including one that changed his life when he was just 16-years-old. A routine blood transfusion to treat Darren’s hemophilia infected him with HIV. It was in the 1980s before such diseases were tested for.
But Darren took this, and other obstacles, in his stride. Never giving up, always fighting and being positive, which lead to the development of a remarkable resilience.
He married his beautiful wife, had three gorgeous children, ran businesses, studied, coached executives, wrote a book! And through all of this advocated for the health and wellbeing of people living HIV and hemophilia.
Darren served on the board of the WA AIDS Council for seven years and was a long-time active contributor to the HIV response in Western Australia. He served on the Haemophilia Foundation of WA for 12 years during the late 1980’s and early 1990’s and represented WA in national forums. Darren was involved in several successful campaigns to gain better treatments for people living with HIV and Hemophilia.
In his book, Resilience, Bouncing Back from the Edge - A True Story of Courage, Determination, and Success he shares his 10 principles of resilience and powerful life story.
