Larapinta 2017

Life is too short to simply watch opportunities pass you by. It’s been a goal of mine for years to hike the 223km of the Larapinta Trail across Central Australia. 2017 was the year that I said enough was enough and here I am about to embark on a challenge of a lifetime… solo.

I’ve always set out to make a positive difference and I'm continually inspired by the work that Operation Flinders do, so in amongst the crazy ideas this trip has developed, one thing that made sense to me was to try and raise much-needed funds as part of my challenge to complete the Larapinta Trail. I've created this page, because I'd love your support.

I’m planning to be on the trail for 14 days. Starting in Alice Springs on August 24, 2017, I’ll be averaging around 16km of hiking a day with a load of around 23kg on my back. I’ll be carrying everything I need – food, clothes, shelter, first aid equipment and everything else. The trail isn’t an easy one with thousands of metres of ascents and descents across the journey, the variation in climate and the presence of dangerous flora and fauna… but I’m also told it’s super beautiful! I honestly can’t wait.

I am under no illusion that each day is going to be a massive test of my character and desire to overcome unique physical, mental and emotional barriers. For those that know me well – being alone is probably going to be the biggest hurdle to overcome. In comparison, my experience will be nothing compared to the unavoidable challenges that many young people across South Australia face daily. It’s these at-risk young people that Operation Flinders Foundation and their work exists for.

It costs $1,650 to fund one young person to have the experience spending 8-days on Yankaninna Station in the Flinders Ranges as part of the Operation Flinders program. As a team leader with Operation Flinders, I’ve seen on numerous occasions the way in which this experience can transform the life of one young person which in the end is ultimately, priceless.
