Jushuas father will be also updating this facebook page along the way https://www.facebook.com/joshuawaitekiakaha Joshy is a beautiful 17 year old man with the biggest heart. He is the protective and loving big brother of Ashley and the kind and caring son of Andy and Rachel. He means the world to them and his extended family. We have been at his bedside for as many hours possible. Joshy has always put everyone elses needs before his own and has a passion for helping other kids in need. We want him to use all of his energy to get stronger and recover. Please use all of your positive thoughts for Josh. Monday, 19 June, Day 38 Something about Fridays which are now our least favorite day of the week! Friday’s seizure was due to a bleed and pressure build up on the brain. Joshy was rushed into theatre and operated on by the magical neuro surgical team at the RBWH for the third time now. This was such a nightmare event for Joshys family and friends. With the urgent surgery completed Joshua was placed into the Intensive Care Unit where he has been cared for by this brilliant compassionate and professional team who Andy, Rachel and Ashley are so grateful and thankful to in caring for Josh. Joshua's resilience, strength and determination astonishes everyone here and abroad, what a Miracle and legend you are our beautiful boy.

Friday 16 June, Day 35 Joshua’s father received a phone call from the hospital at 7:53am. Joshys condition worsened throughout the evening and at 7:30am this morning our boy had a seizure and was rushed into theater immediately. Our hearts are smashed our poor Joshy! Josh has undergone brain surgery for a third time. Post-Surgery Update Joshys seizure was due to a bleed to the brain, he was rushed to emergency surgery. The operation went to plan and Joshy has had a scan of the brain. Neuro Surgeons confirmed the bleed was isolated. Joshy is back to the Intensive Care Unit where he remains sedated, yet again, and still at risk. The Neuro specialists have advised that they are unsure of further injury to the brain at this stage.

Latest update from Andy, Josh's Dad. 15 June 2017. Update on Josh. Friday 26 May - Day 14, Josh remains in ICU, the doctors try to lift sedation and paralyzation for a third time in a week. On this day Josh opened his eyes for the first time since the incident 2 weeks earlier, this was the best feeling ever for his family! Over the next few days Josh is unable to talk and is only moving the right side of his body. After a few more days the pressure monitor is removed from his head and Josh's breathing tube is removed and he is now breathing on his own but with extra oxygen. On Day 18 Josh is moved from ICU to the Neurology Ward and he continues to make slow progress over the week. Day 28, specialist want to try and get Josh moving, through assisted walking, he does well but is still very weak, he gets lightheaded when he is on his feet. This progress alone has been an absolute miracle for us and he amazes us every day. We still cry, with happiness and sadness, watching him go through this. He can only manage a few minutes of physio per day. Josh is now talking and communicating. He is eating, but only a soft food diet and thickened fluids, the everyday tasks of walking little distances, communicating and eating tires Josh quickly. He is in constant pain with his head injury and he is very agitated. Day 32, Josh had surgery to place his piece of skull, that was removed, back in, this has created a minor setback for him. He is in a lot of pain. He is expected to remain in hospital for a few more weeks before a rehabilitation program commences, of which is still yet to be determined. The neurosurgeon team have indicated that Josh will be in rehab for the next few months. Josh's mum and Dad remain at Josh's bedside all day every day. Josh has a long road ahead of him but he is very determined and we are all so very proud of him. We are overwhelmed and very thankful with the kindness, compassion, support and donations we have received, these have really touched our hearts. We thank you for your continued support.

June 9th update Day 28 Update Joshy has continued to make progress and never ceases to amaze us as a strong willed and very driven individual and much loved precious son, brother, nephew, cousin, grandson and friend who we are all so proud of. His never say never attitude and inner strength continues to push through challenges and limitations and with the use of his humour and cheeky smile he continues to bless our lives with his presence. 4 weeks ago I almost lost my rock, my best friend from a cowardly and savage attack. Tonight Joshy will undergo further surgery to reinstate the section of skull that was removed previously due to excessive swelling of the brain ultimately aiding in saving his life. This is a nervous day for all, for some reason we found it easier to approve brain surgery when it was life or death. Now that we have our boy awake I just want to protect him. We just know that the beautiful and professional Neuro team will take good care of our Joshy. Thank you all for your love and support.

June 04 (catching up on updates) Day 23 Joshy progress is improving each day, though it is very minimal he continues to battle forward. He is such a strong and committed kid that continues to amaze us and bless our lives. The extent of brain damage is still yet to be determined as this great team at RBWH work closely with our precious son. We are so blessed Joshy is here with us today, this has been such a stressful and emotional time for his Mum, Dad and his beautiful sister Ashley who have really struggled with this Traumatic and savage attack on our precious Joshy. As his loving parents it still really sikens us to believe that the cowardly attack on our boy was so close to have taken his life from us all. And yet these Cowardly attacks continue out in the community. It's time we all said enough is enough and request a review of the current laws and consequences associated to these unjust life ending and life changing Cowardly attacks. In most cases these Cowards attack in packs, groups. The laws need to identify this and the consequences and sentences handed out to these thugs with maximum penalty.

Update 29 May (Catching up on updates) Joshys progress improves minimal every day as he remains critical. Also Joshy is not yet talking, he is such a strong kid to get to where he is since coming out of the induced coma. The movement tests the team do in an hourly basis are going well. I was in early this morning and Joshy was looking at me then put his right hand on the side of my face, I couldn't hold back the tears I just had to cuddle him. Joshy is such a beautiful son a beautiful being, unfortunately for me he would know just how much I'm hurting inside but also how happy we all are he is here with us today. The Specialist team will meet soon in identifying the next steps for Joshy on his road to recovery with the extent of brain damage yet to be identified. Andy Waite

Update 27 May (catching up on updates) Day 15 Update The beautiful team in the ICU, the Neuro Surgical Team at RBWH started bringing Joshy out of the induced coma late Thursday. This was a very intense and stressful time for the family with Andy, Rach and Ashley by Joshys bedside throughout the night with very minimal change with Joshys status. On Friday a number of movement tests that were carried out with the first one being the nurse telling Joshy Mum and Dad are here open your eyes.... And he did!! Both Rach and I cried with Joy as we hugged each other. Our Son is alive and though still sedated was alert! It is very early days yet and he is still at a Critical Risk but that moment we will never forget! There have been other little milestones Joshy has achieved to the amazement of many that I will share at some point. For now we just would like to say thank you all for your love and support, there is a very long road to be travelled to identify the extent of Joshua's injury's but to all of his beautiful friends, RWBH who have Labeled Joshy the wonder kid! and the community that have been on this awful rollercoaster ride, enjoy this moment and punch the air cause Joshy the wonder kid is still here to continually bless our lives xx

Statement from Andy Waite, 23 May. On Friday 12th May at 7.45pm our world changed. A phone call from one of Joshy’s mates saying to get to McDonalds Redcliff urgently. Josh had been cowardly attacked by a complete stranger. We are now on Day 11, and our beautiful, kind, loving and caring son is fighting to stay alive with the assistance of the amazing team in ICU in the RBWH. The past 11 days has been a living hell. I have never cried so much and hurt so much in my life as we struggle to remain strong and positive waiting for our beautiful son to return. Every day is a rollercoaster of hurt, anguish, anxiety, anger and emotions. We are just trying to get through hour by hour. Rachel, Joshy’s mum had mother’s day planned with Josh and Ashley going out for lunch and where Joshy was looking forward to ‘feeding his face’ (his words) and today is Rachel’s birthday, sitting in intensive care with only one wish, for our Joshy to come home.
