Hi, I've decided to raise money and awareness for BeyondBlue a non-profit organisation who raise money for people with mental health issues, particularly depression, anxiety and suicide prevention. To raise awareness and money for this cause I will be running 5kms a day in April from the 1st - 30th.
I want to raise awareness for depression and anxiety because it affects so many Australians with approximately 3 million Aussies experiencing either depression or anxiety and 45 percent of people will experience one of these mental health issues at some point in their life time. If left untreated it could lead to someone attempting suicide which is sadly the leading cause of death for males and females between the ages of 15 - 44. Each year approximately 3,000 people in Australia die from suicide, which on average is about 8 people day. These are all very scary and real statistics.
By raising money for BeyondBlue I hope that I'll be able to at least help with reducing depression and anxiety in Australia which will hopefully result in suicide prevention, even if my impact is only miniscule. It can be hard to speak about the way you are feeling to friends and family because as humans naturally we might find it embarrassing that we are feeling the way they are. Even though it is completely normal and very common, especially teenage boys and adults who tend to bottle their emotions up. Remember even if you are just having a bad day, say something to your family and friends! It may take some courage but damn it feels good to tell someone how you are feeling.
My goal is for me to reach $1,000 which will all be donated to BeyondBlue. I'll keep all of you regularly updated with Facebook posts of my running log and a selfie post 5k. Any donation would mean a lot.
Thanks, Rob
