Perth Intervention Centre is a not for profit organisation supporting families in Perth and across Australia who are using a unique method of teaching to educate their special needs children. Often these children have autism and have limited or no verbal communication along with poor motor skills. Both speech and motor skills are needed to demonstrate understanding and because these children can't they are considered to have low intelligence and therefore do not have access to a regular curriculum at school. Rapid Prompting Method (RPM) is a way to help individuals with autism and other developmental disabilities to receive an education that is age appropriate through the teaching of knowledge and skills which considers their motor, emotional and sensory learning needs. While many individuals with autism are considered to have or to be treated like they have an intellectual disability, RPM assumes competence (in other words believes that the individual CAN learn), and unlike other special needs teaching methods, the educator adapts his/her teaching style to cater for the individual needs of the student to ensure success. RPM differs, in that it TEACHES the individuals the motor skills necessary to demonstrate their understanding. For example, through the use of a stencil (plastic board with the letters of the alphabet cut out) the children are taught how to move around the board and touch the letters with either a pencil or their finger. Lessons vary from session to session and are educational (they do maths, science and history for example) and the type of questions asked and level of prompting depend on the skill level, emotional well being and sensory needs of the child. It does not expect the individual to learn in one way and caters for individual needs and differences resulting in success! While this method of teaching is not yet evidence based, evidence is mounting that not all students respond to current teaching methods (involving lots of repetition) and that motor issues may be the reason for this. RPM caters for the motor challenges faced by the individual which is why so many families are finding success! Funds raised will help support workshops from international providers (the current workshop being supported will be in Perth in August 2017 with Soma, the founder of the method who will be working with 7 children) and assisting local community support groups (Perth support group starting soon!) The video above is an add for Apple showing Dillon using an iPad to communicate. Dillon learnt to use an iPad through Rapid Prompting Method! Supporting our cause is TAX DEDUCTIBLE. Please help other individuals like Dillon have their voice heard through supporting our cause. Thank you for your support!
