Help Keziah live with Type 1 Diabetes!
On Monday the 12th of December my daughter Keziah, aged 5 was rushed to the Canberra hospital in an ambulance. She had previously been unwell for about 2 weeks being diagnosed with viral infections, she was also loosing weight rapidly. Our family doctor was quite concerned and had decided to go ahead with a glucose test after previous fixes had failed to cure her illness. Her test reading was 31.4 (extremely abnormal for a child of her age and weight). We were rushed into the peadiatrics high dependancy ward at the Canberra hospital. After further tests were completed I was advised that my daughter has type 1 diabetes. I was shattered to be told that my daughter would be insulin dependent for the rest of her life.
What does this mean for Keziah ?
She will need ongoing outpatient visits, along with dieticians, endocrinologist diabetes educators, and General specialist check ups. She starts kindy next year, it will be a rough and lengthy process but we will continue to learn and educate ourselves to ensure Keziahs health and lifestyle remains happy and as normal as possible. We are very lucky to have our surrounding family and friends who have showed so much support and love throughout these tough couple of weeks.
As mentioned Keziah is now insulin dependent for life. Being only 5 years old it has really taken a toll on her emotions and also her awareness of needles and injections. In the near future I am wanting to invest in a insulin pump as well as a continuous blood monitor so the everyday process of injecting insulin will become a lot easier and less painful for her. The insulin pumps can cost over $4000 and the glucose monitor is $2000...
If you would like to donate to help me invest in a pump for Keziah, that would be more than appreciated!. Even the smallest amounts will be more than helpful. Thank You for your time and your donations!
Kindest regards,
Casey and Keziah ??
The Costs
These pumps alone cost on average around $10,000 so if I can make at least half of that I would be grateful to anyone willing to help make her day to day life easier.
A little about Type 1 Diabetes
-Type 1 diabetes is a lifelong autoimmune disease that destroys the ability to produce insulin, a hormone which is vital for life.
-People can be diagnosed with the disease at any age, though diagnosis is most common in children.
-To stay alive people with type 1 diabetes need multiple insulin injections or a continuous infusion from an insulin pump every day. However, insulin is not a cure.
-The strict daily regime of blood glucose management can be a heavy burden, impacting quality of life through the constant fear of hypoglycaemia and risk of complications.
- The causes of type 1 diabetes are not fully understood, though genetic and environmental triggers play a role. There is currently no way to prevent or cure type 1 diabetes.
