We will be traveling to Cambodia for the month of January for a health education placement as part of our bachelor of nursing degree. Our trip is organised by Antipodeans, an organisation who partner with universities to provide students with volunteer primary healthcare experience in international locations.
In Cambodia, we will work alongside the Peoples Improvement Organisation (PIO) in Stung Meanchey. There, we will provide free health education and medical health checks to the families that continue to live and work in a former garbage dump.
We will also be spending time in Psar Touch village, a slum area in the outskirts of Phnom Penh with the Riverkids Organisation. They provide protective services, education and housing and homeless shelter for the children in this community.
Our time will be spent in these and other poverty-stricken areas around Phnom Penh including schools and orphanages performing health checks, wound care and first aid, and educating community members on personal hygiene and sanitation, baby care and preventing common illnesses such as diarrhea and dehydration and SO MUCH MORE! We would like to contribute to their health by providing suitable items such as soap, toothbrushes, baby washing tubs and other needed medical supplies to these communities who otherwise have little resources and can’t afford these basic necessities. We have been advised that it is best to purchase these supplies in-country as this keeps profits local and ensures the materials are more consistent with current trends and resources. 100% of the monetary donations will go towards acquiring these goods.
A generous donation of whatever is reasonable for you would be greatly appreciated.
