CFA volunteers are a vital part of our community and play an essential and leading role in the management of fire and other emergencies.  They are part of the community they protect and are often subject to loss during times of disaster too.  

Our volunteer CFA firefighters are facing a long, sustained summer of hot temperatures and elevated fire risk. Events thus far have been devastating in many communities across the state, and in particular, in the east and north eastern regions.

The devastating fires currently burning have come early in this fire season and have placed enormous strain on our volunteer emergency services.  The hottest and driest part of the year is still to come and is likely to stretch our volunteers even further.

Our trained and experienced volunteers are turning out every day to combat these conditions and protect life, property and infrastructure.  They are on the fire ground, in our incident control centres, in the background coordinating crews and doing a myriad of other tasks to help support our communities in this extreme time of need. And they continue to respond to emergency calls in local Brigade areas across the state.

The toll this takes can not be underestimated, and we are, as an organisation dedicated to looking after the welfare of our volunteers, only too aware of the impact this can have on their physical and mental health.

In some instances, our volunteers are fighting fires having lost, or in the middle of losing, their own homes. And yet they keep on going. The volunteering spirit during these times is stronger than ever and we are proud of all that they do.

VFBV works closely with our Brigades to support volunteers, and has established a fund so we may support Brigades, Groups and individual firefighters who are in need of support. It can be hard to ask for help and we are sensitively supporting those who need assistance.
