UPDATE FROM COWELL...15/08/2017 The time we spent at Alberrie was wonderful, but not long enough for Crackers to fully heal up and for us to continue our journey. :( I am sad that the trip has ended, but forever thankful to still have my boy with me. Things could have turned out very differently. Sad but glad of what we have accomplished after everything that has happened. Crackers' injuries all healed but the tenderness in his hump is still there. I was not prepared to drop our load anymore or leave behind any more water to keep going. Being so desperate to keep my promise to him to buy him a beer at the William Creek pub, but I was definetly not prepared to work Crackers and let him hurt anymore, this amazing boy has been through enough. He has done everything I have asked of him, and more. We could have kept walking to the ends of the earth, and he would follow me. He is so amazing and tough, I am so proud of him. Unfortunatley there are some things in life beyond our control. I would still really like to catch up with that 'knob-head'...one day. We are both safely home, and the boy can rest up in familiar surroundings with the other humps. On a positive note...with all the generous people and kindness of people donating, we have raised over $2500.00!! And only got a quarter of the way to our destination. There will always be another camel trip ;) Please keep an eye on our facebook page for updates and photos. I will be heading to the Territory early next month to catch up and meet with three of the four chosen charities. It was nice to meet all you friendly people along the way. Thank you for everything. Xxx Junee and Crackers.
My name is Junee-Marree, and I live on the Eyre Peninsula in South Australia.
My plan is to embark on a journey with my camels and my dog. We will be at Marree again to participate in the annual Marree Camel Races held in July. After a few days of rest after the fun filled day of racing and laughing...pack up again and walk north along the Oodnadatta track. We have a facebook page Outback Tracks for Charity to see our updates and progress.
Why?...because I can. Because I need to. Get back to the basics and find my roots, find myself again. And it was suggested to me why not raise some much needed funds for some charities while I am at it? It is such a hard decision. Thinking of current events that have happened to myself and my family, and services that were provided to help us cope with loss caused by murders and suicides. The recent tragic loss of my brother has sent more shockwaves through the entire family.
There are several reasons for wanting do to this trek: Raise awareness for illnesses such as depression, anxiety and hopelessness. And to raise awareness of my faithful companions, my beasts of burden – the beautifully unique camel. They are more than "just a smelly beast that farts both from its butt and its mouth" They are a valuable asset to this country. The needless slaughter by shooting from helicopters is barbaric. Their meat, hair and milk are a prized commodity. They can bring much needed jobs and cash flow within the communities of the outback. I love these animals, they are my family.
It is a journey my heart and soul craves, to find those pieces of myself that were lost to tragedy. Thank you for taking the time to read my story. If you would like to follow us on our journey, check out facebook page Outback Tracks for Charity. My chosen charities are Beyond blue, RDA Alice Springs, Conways Kids and Lions Club Alice Springs. (40% of monies raised in hand - on the road will be for the Lions. $73.80 so far for the Lions 30/6/2017) Thank you for ANY donations made. Greatly appreciated. Every little bit helps.

Junee and crackers it was so lovely to meet you both on the Oodnadatta track. It was a highlight of our trip and put a big smile on the children's faces. Thanks to crackers for the kiss! Good luck with the rest of your journey, and we hope your cold gets better. We thought you could use some money for crackers' biscuits habit. Cameron Family
