We are Nikki and Paul and on June 12, 2016 we will be running the Perth Marathon to raise funds for the Women and Infants Research Foundation (WIRF) WIRF is Western Australia's leading community-based research organisation dedicated to the fields of Obstetrics, Gynaecology and Newborn Medicine and is a leader in research for the prevention of preterm birth.
On February 9 this year our good friends Lauren and Martin welcomed their gorgeous daughter, Freya, into the world. Freya was born at 24 weeks, 2 days (16 weeks premature!) and weighed just 620g (1lb 6oz)! From day one Freya has gone from strength to strength in the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit at King Edward Memorial Hospital.
With around the clock care from the amazing medical professionals and through use of state of the art neonatal equipment Freya has battled through infections, has had multiple blood transfusions, scans of her brain, eyes and heart, received intravenous nutrition and has had her breathing aided via respirator. It is anticipated she will remain in hospital until July.
(At the time of writing Freya is 8 weeks and 2 days old, weighs 1.7kg (3lb 12oz), is drinking milk and has progressed onto a much less invasive breathing aid - an incredibly positive and momentous step in her journey!)
With your help we hope to raise vital funds for WIRF to help King Edward Memorial Hospital purchase equipment for their Neonatal Unit, develop new initiatives and facilitate essential research studies into women and infants’ health to reduce the instances of preterm birth and give all of our miracle premmie babies the very best chance of survival.
