Chris Burgess was serving as a medic in the Australian Army when he had an almost-fatal tank accident. He sustained major spinal injuries and broke 7 disks in his neck & back.
10 years on (after serving overseas) his condition has worsened. Last year he broke an 8th disk & suffered an unrelated stroke. All of this before his 34th birthday.
As his wife and carer, it has been very difficult to sustain a comfortable way of living, with me now only being able to work part time as I am a necessary part of Chris' daily life. I am also the person that is relied upon to bring in an income and have had tremendous difficulty being able to find an ongoing and secure job.
Chris and I are wanting to start a family, despite being under difficult circumstances. We have come to terms with the very real possibility of never owning our own home, but currently we are renting a granny - flat in Sydney's Sutherland Shire and our expensive keep rising with no increase in income to accommodate it.
Chris has suffered far too many health issues before he even turned 30, and I have been unsuccessful in maintaining any kind of generous income in order for us to put any money away. It is because of this that I have resorted to having to campaign on behalf of my wonderful husband, so that we may be able to raise enough money for relocation costs and a bond on a house outside of Sydney, where we both can afford to live. Our current home is behind a house, with approximately 30 feet worth of steep steps leading down to our granny flat. With Chris' back injuries only worsening, it is becoming more difficult every year for him to navigate these stairs.
I hope that this campaign may draw in the compassion of those wanting to donate to somebody worthy- who hasn't had a good run despite his best efforts, and who has constantly put myself, and everybody he loves ahead of himself. He is a true hero in my eyes, and deserves to finally live in a home without the struggle of stairs, and the burden of the consistently rising cost of living in Sydney which, on top of medication expenses, is taking a toll on our finances - or lack there of.
I only want the best for this wonderful man, and wish I could provide him with more than I can currently offer him. I truly hope that somebody out there may donate a few dollars in order for him to have a better quality of life- because God knows, he deserves one.
