In 2015 I rode my motorbike around Australia, stopping in as many towns, talking about the stigma of suicide after the loss of my son Jaie to suicide (April 2014).
I attended a 2.5 day training program 'Train the Trainer' - Lived Experience with Suicide Prevention Australia and Roses in the Ocean (November 2015). I have recently attended event training with the Queensland Mental Health Commission & Roses In The Ocean in Brisbane (April 26th, 2016). On April the 27th, 2016, I also attended training in Postvention support with Standby Response in Maryborough and a networking / renewing the partnership session.
I am able to present an oral or a power point presentation on USB, if any interested parties are able to provide me with a computer linked with either a rear screen projector or television. There is a general discussion and information session involved, as well as a question segment for any people who wish to seek more information or validation.
These discussions/presentations are also designed to work toward helping remove the stigma of depression, mental illness and suicide; as well as discussing solutions and resources that can help others within our community who are at risk or who are bereaved by suicide. I am currently seeking community groups or organisations, businesses, schools or interested people, who wish to assist in removing the misconceptions and stigma surrounding mental illness, depression and suicide.
'Jaies Journey' is registered as a 'Not for Profit' organisation so that not only will this ride bring validation and support to people who need it but, along with my family, we will endeavour to continue helping people at risk; including bereaved families in their times of need. Support will be provided via crisis intervention for 'at risk and vulnerable' people and for families and loved ones when they are bereaved by suicide. This can take the form of assisting in paying for counselling, financial support for food, rent and other necessary and practical things.
I am aware that this will not be an easy task and the challenges will be ongoing, but it is a task that I shall bear and with us, our many supporters.
