This is the heart wrenching reality for Brett and Liz who have recently received news that their 17 year old son, Rhys, has Ewing Sarcoma.
Ewing Sarcoma is a rare form of bone cancers that affects young children and predominantly adolescents. It is a family of cancerous tumours that grow in or on the bone and soft tissue near the bone. In most cases, if detected at an early stage and the tumours haven't spread, it can be treated with a combination of chemotherapy, surgery and radiotherapy.
However, in Rhys’ situation, this is not the case.
Devastatingly for Rhys a tumour formed on his hip which has metastasized to his shoulders, ribs, spine, skull and lungs. For patients detected early, the five-year survival rate is close to 70%. In Rhys’ case, the five-year survival rate is 20% to 30%.
Brett, Liz, Rhys, and brothers Zac, Charlie, Lewis and sister Jorja, are now faced with the unenviable prospect of being separated from each other and their small rural farming community of Wudinna – 600 kms from Adelaide, to be with Rhys whilst he is receiving his treatment.
We want to raise funds to help ease the financial pressure off this wonderful family and in doing so assist them in giving Rhys the best care and support possible.
