Thanks for visiting my fundraising page for the Cairns Corporate Challenge 2014!
You can sponsor me and leave a message by selecting the "make a donation" button above. Please give generously - EVERY LITTLE BIT COUNTS! Even a $2 donation (multiplied by all who read this page) can make a huge difference.
For every cancer diagnosis there are life changing impacts not only on the patient, but also on their family and friends. So many of us are left asking, "What can I do?" This feeling of helplessness has stayed with me for over 20 years.
I can still remember the shock I felt on the first day of year 11 when my dear friend Darren Walker told me why he had suddenly decided to drop out of school.
"There's not much point staying in school when you have 6 months to live."
Darren had been diagnosed with terminal bowel cancer. His one wish was to make it to 18 and have a beer with his mates at the pub. Over the next two years I watched him move in and out of hospice facilities, often told this was his last night. Somehow he manged to hang in there and we got to share that beer.
On 2 February 1991 Darren sadly passed away at the age of 18.
This year, by participating in the Cairns Corporate Challenge, I hope that in some small way I can help to affect positive change in the lives of cancer patients and their loved ones.
On August 23 a group of Cairns locals will be tackling the Kokoda Track to raise much-needed funds for COUCH. Please support this worthwhile charity by sponsoring me to complete this gruelling 96 kilometer jungle trek.
The walk will also be a stark reminder of what many great Australians gave up for our freedom.
At 41 years of age, it will be the toughest physical challenge of my life. I hope that with the support of my friends and family and with Darren watching over me, I can manage to drag this failing body up and down those treacherous hills.
Thanks for your support!
Damian
