2014 Cairns Corporate Challenge:

In 2014 our mission is simple: To bring the Cairns community together and:

  • Raise funds and awareness to support a worthwhile and, most importantly, local charity

  • Learn about the history of the Kokoda Campaign and the courage and sacrifice of the soldiers who fought

  • Experience the magnificent country and culture of Papua New Guinea, our closest neighbour

  • Have a great adventure!

On 23 August 2014, two groups of 20 trekkers will again tackle the Kokoda Track. Two different itineraries will be on offer, each travelling a slightly different path to the same destination. We will start together at Owers Corner, then link up again at Isurava Battlefield, where we will camp overnight together. A Dawn Service the following morning at the Battlefield Memorial will, for many, be a highlight of the trek. It is here that we will honour the soldiers, and their loyal support, the magnificent Fuzzy Wuzzy Angels. It is here that we will give thanks, remembering always what they gave.

Our chosen charity for 2014 is COUCH, an action group formed to provide cancer services to Cairns residents. COUCH has raised in excess of $600,000 to date and our Challenge will support the creation of their planned Wellness Centre in Reservoir Road, Manoora.

Whilst no-one can get inside the skin of a cancer patient, we believe that challenges many of the trekkers will face may provide some small insight into the journey of those battling this insidious disease.

Training and preparation are incredibly important but will take us only so far. For most, there will be moments along the track, with just one more hill, where they will be required to draw on mental and physical reserves they may not have thought about before.

This is a journey. It is a journey that starts from the moment you decide to join the group. It is a journey that will include responsibility, discipline and hardship. It will also include support for your fellow group members, as you begin to understand that whilst this is in some ways an individual pursuit, it is also a team effort. It will provide a deeper understanding, and appreciation, of Australia’s military history.

It will offer you new friends – both Australians and Papua New Guineans. You will experience the gentle care of our local porters as they support us across the track. And you will learn about our closest neighbour, only 1.5 hours away in time, but worlds away in culture.
