About

Hi all,
I am swimming 19.7k in the Rottnest Swim (http://rottnestchannelswim.com.au) on Saturday 22nd February to raise awareness of MS and Breast Cancer.

MS (Multiple sclerosis) was 'founded' by Charcot, a French neurologist in 1868. It is a disease which affects the central nervous system and despite all the research, there is still no cure. It is an unpredictable disease and the episodes can happen at different times at different time intervals and affect different areas of the central nervous system. Surprisingly there is not the one symptom that can indicates the presence of MS or one test that can truely and accurately establish a diagnosis.

The disease can disappear after a few episodes or progress steadily over the years. This slow deterioration means a person's capabilities such as walking can decrease. There are about 23,000 Australians who have MS.

I know someone who has MS and for the past 10 years has remained strong and positive throughout it all and although wheelchair bound, is still an inspiration to us all.

Breast Cancer can affect us all and many of us will know someone who has had breast cancer. It is the most common cancer affecting women. According to the latest statistics, in 2013, they estimate that 14,940 women will be diagnosed with breast cancer.

Breast cancer affects women (and some men) world wide and in Australia, women have a 1 in 8 lifetime risk of developing breast cancer with the risk of developing breast cancer increasing with age but this isn't always the case where my friend was diagnosed with breast cancer at age 27. Some people are lucky and survive yet some are not inclduing my biological grandmother who I never met as she died of breast cancer before I even knew about her.

With more research and funding, perhaps one day there will be no more cases of breast cancer or cancer for that matter.

So if you have some spare change, please sponsor me and my swim - the swim I am doing to raise awareness of both MS and Breast Cancer.

Thank you.
