🌾 Call to Action: Our Farmers Are in Crisis — It's Time to Stand With Them
Across Victoria, the land is dry — but the hearts of our farmers are heavier still.
Years of punishing drought have stripped back more than crops and pasture. They’ve worn down the resilience of the people who grow our food, care for our land, and underpin regional economies. The emotional, financial, and physical toll is immense — and in too many cases, unbearable.
This is more than a farming crisis. It’s a human crisis.
The Hidden Costs of Drought
Behind every withered paddock is a family under pressure — facing tough decisions about their future, their finances, and their very way of life. Many are forced into poverty, others into silence, and some — heartbreakingly — into despair.
Mental health challenges in farming communities are rising at alarming rates, with suicide remaining one of the most tragic and avoidable outcomes of this crisis. Isolation, stigma, and a culture of stoicism often prevent those suffering from seeking help until it’s too late.
A Call for Unity and Action
This is a call to all of us — government, businesses, service providers, and everyday Australians:
We must increase funding and access to rural mental health services — not just crisis hotlines, but face-to-face, community-based, and culturally sensitive support.
We must strengthen economic support systems — simplifying and expanding drought assistance, farm debt mediation, and income support for farming families.
We must invest in long-term solutions — from water infrastructure to climate resilience planning, so that farmers are not left vulnerable with every dry season.
We must foster community awareness — breaking down the stigma around mental health, and encouraging open, honest conversations before the burden becomes too great.
