Hi it's Chelsea and Taiga here. We are lucky to be able to go and visit my sister Cherna and husband Olivier in Zambia in September this year. Cherna's friend Violet runs a school for extremely disadvantaged children in Lusaka. The aim of the school is to provide quality education to vulnerable children- particularly orphans, young girls and those who cannot afford to go to school. The school is new and was started by the passionate Violet Mundubi in 2022. It now has 300 students from 4 to 17 years of age and they have 9 volunteer teachers. It is run off donations and support from well wishers. If the school is lucky, they might be able to provide the teachers a payment of $40AUD per month through donations. The school provides food and clothing to the children, however they struggle financially and don't have enough furniture, school supplies, and are packed into rooms with barely any room to move. The school floods regularly, and Violet has been sending us videos of the school bus that they use to pick the children up when it's flooding- of which there are no seats and no battery- the children have to push it! Taiga and I will volunteer at the school when we are there, but would love to leave a lasting benefit if we can. We have spoken to Violet about many of the needs (basically everything you can think of!) They have outgrown the space, and if I could fundraise $19,000 we could actually buy them a building on the block (they're renting at the moment). This is a big dream, but I thought- why not go for it! So the wishlist goes: If we raise $19,000- we help purchase the new building. If we raise less- we purchase chairs and tables (currently they sit on the floor but it floods) We will also undertake a Permablitz of sorts, purchasing fruit trees in large pots that will hopefully provide sustenance and nutrition for the children. As well as this we will purchase period underwear for the girls. We will take a 30kg suitcase with us full of stationary, period undies, solar mats and whatever else we can fit. All remainding funds will be donated to the school. Please read here for all the information and Bio of the school. https://acrobat.adobe.com/id/urn:aaid:sc:AP:2063796c-090a-4e70-a8d6-fc42cd859eda?fbclid=IwY2xjawIOhmhleHRuA2FlbQIxMAABHTw1IqoHUjrLI-8XY4RKzM96KYVhvkeK9pr8DhhX3nBjlkqBq9KxHIC_mw_aem_nJXTG8FpIFUwSmJ4fiZe8Q We thankyou sincerely for any support you can offer. We hope we can help make a lasting impact on the lives of these (nearly 400) students.

Hi everyone, I’m having trouble getting all the images uploaded on my phone, but here’s a few. Yesterday we spent the day gathering lots of essentials for planting. We bought lots of tools including hoses and fittings for the farm and carpentry tools to be able to use the scrap wood for seating around the plants. We ensured we bought plants and pots from locals, and managed to get - mangoes, papaya, mull berries, nachees, tamarind, advocadoes, bananas, custard apples, lychees and some ornamentals including bamboo. We went to the worm farm and purchased 20 bags of castings and compost and compost mulch. The boss donated a worm farm to the school which will be delivered on Saturday! We will buy one for the farm. We are awaiting the plumbing quote to plumb in the toilets and handwashing sink- of which we will capture the handwashing water for watering the plants. Currently they have 1 working toilet for 373 students plus staff! This will give them 4 working toilets and handwashing. There’s is cholera in flood season. This is also why we bought lots of little chairs as the ground floods and they can’t sit in the mud. Many thousands of local people died of cholera last year. We are awaiting 2 quotes for a new playground - we will ensure it can have vines growing up it for shade and food. The space is so hard to work with as some corridors between buildings require you to walk sideways to fit through. There’s no way we can get a wheelbarrow around with the narrow and uneven ground, so today we will be bucketing soil around the school. The soil gets delivered this morning too. I’ll keep you updated!! Thanks again!

Hi everyone! Well we finally made it to Lusaka and today we visited the Bookworm School for the first time. We were greeted with some beautiful dongs from the children. Not all of them were at school as it was only the first day back after holidays. Violet and all the teachers- all volunteers are doing an incredible job under very dire circumstances. Violet has adopted 18 of the orphan children all on her own. The boys sleep at the school and the girls at her home. She works nights at the French school ( that my brother in law manages) to earn money to pay for everything. We took a tour of the school then headed off to the new plot of land that we will try to permablitz. Unfortunately the road was closed and we were running short of time so we went shopping for as many urgent items as possible. We had a woman Gayle with us from Australia who personally paid for a large amount of items, and all up we spent just over $1000. This was mostly on bulk foods, sanitary items, cleaning products, chairs , toys ( as many wooden toys as we could but also we did end up with some plastic) as the little kids had no toys and they morning activity was ripping up old newspapers. We wrote a list of priorities and when we return next week we will get stuck into painting, planting and plumbing. The slide urgently needs replacing so we will try to get another one ( see in pics). We also met the only survivor of the terrible accident where we paid for the boys funerals. His name is Vincent and he just got off crutches but will struggle to walk. Next week we will go to the farm. Thanks everyone for your support, I’ll keep you all updated.

What a truly inspiring story. All children should have the opportunity to feel safe and happy in school and be provided with an education.
