Raising funds for: Pakistan Women's AFL Team
The Pakistan Women's AFL team are a barrier breaking group of trailblazers who love their footy. This is about more than sport. It's an opportunity for these woman to have a life changing experience, to change the narrative of their country and in their communities. They will compete at the 2024 AFL Asia Cup in Vietnam on the big stage. This is an official AFL event as part of their International Series, featuring only local players. Through any of your assistance, alongside the Freo de Janeiro Podcast and Rogue Teamwear, we can make it possible for the team to overcome the barriers to get to Vietnam and be properly kitted out in female fitting and culturally appropriate uniform for the first time (for instance, no white shorts). Your support will enable each of the squad players to receive the following uniform: 1 x longsleeve guernsey 1 x women's shorts 1 x long pant skins 1 x socks 1 x kit bag The team are guided and supported expertly by the respected Australian coach, Michael Gallus. He is a volunteer, based in Australia, who is taking leave from work to help the team. He is coaching and motivating the team remotely in the time being. Michael is a legendary figure behind AFL's growth in Pakistan. The team debuted at the 2017 AFL International Cup in Melbourne. The players hail from all parts of Pakistan and go through many amazing background stories to make it to the big stage. Hear about one of the stories of foundation player, Karishma Ali https://freodejaneiro.com/karishma/ Why is the Freo de Janeiro Podcast helping the Pakistan Women's AFL Team? After hearing a lot about the team, I got to see them play at the 2023 AFL Asian Championships in Thailand. Being Aussie with Pakistani heritage, it was incredible to see their passion for footy. It compelled me to do what I can to help the team get the best resources at their next tournament. Costs: - Uniforms cost $1,300 AUD, so your donation will contribute to the players getting the best apparel to make their mark and kick some goals for their country. - Airfares will be to help the players and Michael get from Pakistan to Vietnam. This is a costly exercise for the players. This is approximately $1,500 AUD per squad member plus Michael. If in reading this, you are able to help with any other logistics, equipment, contacts or ideas, please do reach out. Thank you for supporting these talented women to achieve their dreams of representing Pakistan and doing so in a well-fitting and befitting way! Update
18 Dec 2024
Hello to you The AFL Asia Cup 2024 has concluded a week ago in Ho Chi Minh, Vietnam. I am Abid Imam from the Freo de Janeiro Podcast in Western Australia. Through this campaign, I have been working closely with Michael Gallus, the head coach of Pakistan's women's and men's team to coordinate what was required. It has been an honour to witness first-hand Michael's amazing dedication to the players of Pakistan and the impact he has made on countless individuals. Speaking of impact, our biggest appreciation goes to your tremendous support and generosity shown through this campaign and other efforts. The campaign has been to help ensure the players wear high quality female friendly uniforms and get support with some travel to Vietnam. As he has done through the years, Michael travelled to Pakistan prior to the tournament to ensure the women's and men's team had a quality training camp and his squads were selected. I worked with Rogue Teamwear to ensure the uniforms were designed and ready for the team in Vietnam. Unfortunately due to monumental administrative failures at AFL Pakistan, we found out just a few days before the tournament that the women's team needed to withdraw from the Asia Cup because only 8 of the squad of 15 had their visas. The men's team, also had four key players miss out due to these administrative failures. This story has been captured by a local journalist Asem Mustafa Awan in Pakistan. https://thepenpk.com/afl-pakistans-mismanagement-costs-teams-asia-cup-glory/ This late notice was hugely disappointing and very shocking to all involved. Especially when we had embarked on all the work in good faith thinking there would be no visa issues with getting the team to Vietnam. The women's team missing out on the tournament is devastating on a number of levels. To say this was a shock and disappointment, is a complete understatement. Michael and myself had and still have serious questions as to how this could have occurred. We believe these need to be addressed and explained by AFL Pakistan. Michael and I are immensely disappointed in the missed opportunity for these players to represent their country. We have been in contact with players in the team to provide reassurance and support. With the uniforms having been purchased through these fundraising efforts, we find it important that each player who was selected to represent Pakistan and missed out on this opportunity, should receive their uniform as a symbol of their achievement and encouragement for future endeavours. We have provided the uniforms to AFL Pakistan in Vietnam so they can ensure each of the women are presented them as deserved. There have been many months and years (especially in Michael's case) to introduce, support and grow the players in their footy journeys. This setback demonstrates the challenges in embarking on positive sport development work, especially across gender equity in different regions where the work can be even more impactful, but face barriers. We want to reassure all supporters that the goodwill generated through this campaign has not been in vein but will only strengthen the resolve of the women for their future opportunities in footy, so they can take the field and represent Pakistan on the international stage at the next opportunity. We thank you again for your support. Michael has since, totally understandably resigned from his role as head coach of the men's and women's team. I look forward to seeing the women receiving their uniforms and next time being able to take to the field, when their governing body can properly honour them. We wish the best for all footy players in Pakistan and hope to see them continue breaking barriers.
