About

SOLD OUT - See below for fundraiser info

The Pacific Black Duck Conservation Group and the Derwent Estuary Program have launched the 'Ducks of Tasmania' booklet. The booklet features beautiful new illustrations of all native and introduced ducks species from Tasmanian artist Sam Lyne.

PLEASE NOTE: The first print run has been more popular with Tasmanian schools than anticipated. This is absolutely fantastic and we so excited about the educational outcomes! This however means our booklets allocated from this first print run for individuals are now exhausted.

Free copies are still available from the Derwent Estuary Program office (Level 4, 24 Davey St Hobart), and from a lot of Tasmanian councils. If in the middle or north of Tasmania, copies are available through Launceston, Burnie and Southern Midlands councils and from NRM North. https://nrmnorth.org.au/

If unsure where to go at your local council to get one, please get in touch and we'll chase it up for you: pacificblackduck@gmail.com. The online fundraiser will remain active incase anybody would like to donate to the second print run fund.

Thank you for your interest and support!

FUNDRAISING

We are hoping to raise money for another large print run to distribute to schools, councils, NGOs, shops, wildlife sanctuaries etc. Basically, as many places as possible to spread the word about native ducks and how to help them! The money we make from any sales will contribute to printing more. Schools in particular are a priority for us, and we hope to be able to provide copies of the booklet to many Tasmanian schools.

THE BOOKLET

The booklet is aimed at both novice birdwatchers and people with little to no birdwatching experience but who enjoy seeing their local ducks. The booklet encourages people to enjoy our ducks by watching them, learning about them and trying to spot them all, rather than harming them and our waterways by feeding them.

The booklet includes a checkbox so people and families can tick each species off as they spot them, and includes information on how to look after wild ducks. It includes tips on identifying similar-looking species and ways to identify PBD x Mallard hybrids.

The initial print run of the booklet was made possible with a grant from the WIRES National Grants Program and several Tasmanian councils and NGOs such as Birdlife Tasmania and Landcare Tasmania. Many of the first run's copies will be distributed to these organisations as an education tool for use in problem feeding areas.

The lack of awareness of the existence of our native ducks and the impacts of mallard x PBD hybridisation is the main reason for public opposition to Mallard removal efforts by local governments. People are unaware that by feeding ducks any food, they are support feral mallards and are encouraged dumping. We hope to slowly change this attitude and behaviour with this booklet.
