50 years after living in the asbestos-mining town of Wittenoom, my mum Penny contracted Mesothelioma; a lung cancer caused by exposure to asbestos. Mum lost her short but brave battle a few weeks after her 60th birthday in August 2022. Over the next few months, I will be raising funds for the National Centre for Asbestos-Related Diseases (NCARD) at the University of Western Australia. NCARD are currently undertaking ground-breaking research into asbestos-related diseases, specifically mesothelioma, as well as undertaking a number of clinical trials like the ones my mum was a part of. The research and trials funded by NCARD gave my mum an extra 12-months with us that we may not have had otherwise. This allowed mum to meet and spend some time with my new-born daughter, Elsie. My hope is that this research can one day find a cure for Mesothelioma, so that other families across the world do not have to experience the loss that we suffered last year. On April 27 I will be walking the Cape-to-Cape in southwest WA in mum's memory. I plan on walking from Cape Leeuwin to Cape Naturalist and continuing down to Eagle Bay to mum's resting place, in 5 days. My goal is to raise on average $100 per day for 100 days before I set off. This target of $10,000 will cover the cost of one mesothelioma patient, just like mum, to be a part of a new, world-first clinical trial to improve the combined chemoimmunotherapy using non-invasive imaging.

Hey everyone. Well, we made it! On Monday morning I was joined by a close group of friends for the last leg from Yallingup to Cape Naturalist, before heading down the Cape to Eagle Bay. Mum would’ve loved to have seen it all. Thanks to your generosity, almost $16,000 was raised for NCARD for clinical trials. Personally, I can’t thank you all enough for the support - especially Dad and Jess who’ve been absolute rocks throughout this fundraiser. And a special shout out to my oldest and dearest friend Tom Peckitt who joined me for the Cape to Cape. I’ll be sure to keep in touch with the team at NCARD and see what progress they have in Mesothelioma treatment over the coming months and years. Thank you :)

Just a quick message to say thank you to you everyone for helping with this fundraising cause in memory of mum. It’s been overwhelming to see the generosity and messages of support. I will be starting the walk this Thursday at Cape Leeuwin, with a few good friends joining me on the final day from Yallingup to Cape Naturalist, before I continue on down to Eagle Bay.

Thank you everyone who has donated to this great cause. Friends, family, colleagues and strangers :) At the first week of each month, the donations to that point go straight to NCARD. Last week they contacted me to let me know just over $10,000 was deposited into their pool for clinical trials, which is enough to cover another patient going through a mesothelioma treatment trial. On behalf of NCARD, Thank you!

Thank you so much to everyone who has been a part of supporting this great cause. Friends, family, colleagues, and even some complete strangers who stumbled upon the cause. Mum would be so thankful to all of you ? We have raised enough money to support a place for a patient on a new clinical trial. I will keep up the fundraising effort until I do the Cape to Cape at the end of April to try to fund additional research and trials. The money raised in the last couple of weeks and over the next few months gets deposited to NCARD on the first day of each month. If you want to read more about the trials they are doing, they share this on their website and upload publications regularly with trials progress and outcomes https://ncard.org.au/clinical-trials/ Tom ?

Just wanted to say a huge thank you to everyone who has donated so far! Whether or not you knew mum, your generosity is greatly appreciated and really is overwhelming. Just as importantly, it’s been good to chat to people who’ve also been affected, as well as have conversations with people who weren’t aware of the affect asbestos is still having so long after the mines were shut down. On average there are still 2-3 people diagnosed with mesothelioma every single day in Australia - so the research and trials NCARD are currently undertaking really are critical in helping those who are and will be affected. Thanks again and please feel free share this cause and have the conversations with you friends and family Tom ??
