Raising funds for: Justin Williams
Ian and Leisa are reaching out for help to complete special needs accommodation. This is to offer suitable people living with disabilities to live on a property they have purchased, including being able to provide holiday accommodation to caregivers. It is a large block with space for multiple dwellings and is in an ideal location for a holiday, catering to the unique needs of special needs families. The plans have been drawn up for a two-bedroom granny flat, and there is an opportunity to renovate a shed into a studio unit. Still, due to the rising costs in the building industry, all the funds had to be diverted into renovating the main cottage (two bedrooms) to disability standards. Did you know? Little funding is available for caregivers to have a break, let alone in accommodation with their loved ones, which is specifically built to disability standards. The pressures on special needs families are enormous, and many families' needs go unnoticed as it all seems too difficult to find a solution to their daily extenuating problems. Families with special needs often do not have holidays as even if they can afford to get away, there is a shortage of suitable accommodation. The issues are heartbreaking and overwhelming. The accommodation problem for people with disability is complex as their carers age, and sadly some find their way into the aged care or hospital system here in Australia. It is not okay that families must fight so hard for their loved ones to have basic human needs met, i.e., safe, affordable accommodation, let alone to expect to have a holiday. Your giving will help us: • complete accommodation for our son with special needs due to substantial cost overruns, which we are financing entirely on our own; and need to make financially sustainable so he can fulfill his goals. • enable us to further support the community by renovating the shed into a studio apartment (the granny flat will now need to be used to bring in rental income to make the whole project viable). Our story In 2003, our son Justin was diagnosed with autism and developmental delays. He was 27 months old when we were told he would have the mental capacity of a 14-month-old and that he would never speak or progress beyond a toddler's ability. My life was thrown into turmoil as suddenly, my hopes and dreams were put on hold, sidelined by a constant stream of appointments, decisions, and unforeseen responsibilities. You can read about our story in my book Hope Wins (or by exploring my website www.leisawilliamsauthor.com The emotional and physical toll of the advocacy to enable Justin to fulfil his calling to be a Pastor is complicated. We have taken this seriously and are grateful that a church in the local area has been willing to intern Justin as he completes his Bible college studies online with full support. To enable Justin to pursue his hopes and dreams, we have bought a house that required a complete renovation to disability standards. The cost personally involves a mortgage of well over AUD 1 million. A team of dedicated builders has completed the two-bedroom cottage, which in this current climate, is a miracle. Unfortunately, the rising costs of building materials, labour, and interest rates have blown out the project's cost by an estimated AUD 200,000. To cover the ongoing mortgage repayments, we need to build a granny flat to rent out to make the project viable however, the studio space in the garage could offer short-term accommodation for caregivers or a family with special needs. It is dependant on how much we raise to what extent the shed can be renovated. The property is 400 meters from the water, a 5-minute walk to shops, cafes, doctors, and other medical facilities, and is near a public pool. It is close to beaches. The property and surrounding area are flat and wheelchair accessible. People with special needs can readily access the local area. Justin's goal is to build independent living skills to live independently in his home and work as a Pastor at Gateway Church, and he hopes to get a job in a local café. He needs 24/7 care and support to accomplish these goals until additional capacity is built. Justin had never lived out of his home in Canberra and, with full support, is doing well. We have entrusted him to the care of a disability support company with an incredible staff. We never expected to be in this position where Justin could live without us, but Justin has a goal to learn to live independently and build his capacity to serve others in a church community. What do we need - to raise $ 200,000 to build a disability-friendly studio apartment for respite and short-term rentals for caregivers. - Any additional funds raised would be used to complete the project by landscaping the grounds, erecting fences to separate the various areas, and providing an outdoor pergola and BBQ area. Thank you for reading our story, and if you feel moved to give, we would be grateful. No one should go through what we have had to go through to fight for funding and accommodation and to give our son with a disability the dignity of achieving his goals and having a meaningful life. Ideally, we should raise the money by the 5th of April (or sooner) to complete this project without delay. Thank you for reading our story and kindly considering if you can contribute to this property's completion. Ian and Leisa Williams

Last week, Justin had a productive week in the community, settling into his house and learning valuable life skills. We are so grateful for the support that he receives. He also told me that his service at Gateway Community Table makes a real difference, feeding people who are homeless and need their basic needs met. He is part of this service in the local community https://www.gatewayhunter.org.au/care Thank you for your generous support, we still have ways to go, and every bit helps. We may consider putting on a studio in the short term till we can raise enough funds for the granny flat. Please pass this link on to anyone interested in our cause. Ian is being creative in developing the property and working on how to best until our target is reached, which we know God has in hand, and we trust in Him each step of the way on this journey of faith, hope, and trust. Thanks for listening and caring, Ian, Leisa, and Justin

We have come so far but still have ways to go! Thank you for the generous donations in the last two weeks, this snapshot of the house is a reminder of what has been accomplished, and we are so grateful. However, we still have ways to complete the project to offer affordable accommodation to a couple of other people living with disabilities who would be compatible with living with Justin and building a granny flat for caregivers to have much-needed breaks. Please spread the word about our cause and believe with us that 'Nothing is impossible for God' Luke 1:37

Justin moved into the house last week. The main two-bedroom house and support workers' cottage are nearing completion, enabling Justin to move in. It is a considerable step forward concerning completing the project, but we still have ways to go. Our local paper asked if we would allow them to run a story highlighting housing affordability amongst rate rises. We decided to share our story as there is a real threat to the completion of the project when there is such a desperate need for accommodation, especially in the special needs space. Scroll through the above photos to see the article. The costs are astronomical to set up people with disabilities in their own homes. For many families in this situation, it is simply not an option to buy and renovate a house to a disability standard. That is why we hope our property can be fully developed, so there are more accommodation options other than for Justin if we can do one small thing to help a few more families and their loved ones. Please forward our crowdfunding link to your family and friends; even a small contribution makes a difference, not only to the NDIS participants who will have accommodation but for caregivers who will have the opportunity to have a coastal holiday. The funding will go towards the granny flat for caregivers; additional funds needed for - gardens and pergola - driveway - renovation of the shed into a self-contained studio - to offer additional accommodation So grateful for any support and for spreading the word of this campaign, Leisa, Ian, and Justin

Dear Friends and Supporters, Well, moving day has come and gone. Ian hired this truck from Hertz and drove up to take a garage full of furniture to the house, kindly given to Justin, and we are so grateful for such generosity. Ian and I will spend most of the school break setting up the house and moving Justin in on the 30th of September. Please spread the word for our cause so we can meet our target and provide accommodation for other families in our situation. We are facing another storm for Justin's essential home and living needs. It is ongoing for caregivers, and so disappointing that the system that is meant to be helping give people living with disabilities a meaningful life is nothing but obstructive. If you are facing a storm, whatever your issue is, remember the Bison, and by the grace and strength that God gives, you keep moving forward towards it…. We will get through not by might, not by power but by my Spirit, says Lord Zechariah 4:6 A fellow caregiver in the US sent this post this week, and I resonate as we continue to advocate for Justin and others in our situation. Instead of running away from danger, Bison turned to face the storm & this admission struck a nerve. Bison turn to face a storm? Indeed that goes against every instinct in their bodies, right? As people, we tend to run. Run from conflict. Accept the status quo. Accept what the media broadcasts or our caseworker tells us or what the world wants us to believe – true or not. "There's no hope." "There aren't any funds." "Your situation will never change." "There are no residential options." And we walk away, defeated, with our tail between our legs. But – What if, As we walked away, we paused. & we prayed. & we beseeched the heavens for courage And then – Instead of running, we slowly turned around. We turned to face our tormentor Turned to face our problem Turned to face our addiction Turned to face our doubt Did we turn to face the gigantic hurdle that separates our children from the services that they desperately need & instead turn towards hope? HOPE does win! And it certainly OVERCOMES... Love and blessings, Leisa, Ian, and Justin

Dear Friends and Supporters, We still have ways to go to meet our target, it is less than 6 weeks till Justin moves in. next weekend Ian is driving a truckload of furniture from Canberra to Swansea so that Justin can start setting up, stay tuned pictures will be posted. I have added some new photos including the plan for the granny flat. Ian and I thought we would be living in it, but it seems like God has other plans and Justin is thriving living without us and becoming independent more each day. The granny flat will now be used for respite for families with special needs children or caregivers who would like a beach holiday. Note the space in the backyard for this, where we will put a fence down the middle of the yard for privacy. Justin eventually (after more social skills therapy) will have a flatmate in the house, the cottage out the back is for the support workers to sleep in and the shed will become a self-contained studio for another person/s living with a disability to live in. We could not be doing this without the support of Gateway Church and 121 Hunter supports for whom we are so grateful. Justin is now able to live a meaningful life. And we hope to offer a space to a few others to give hope and rest by providing affordable accommodation on this property that literally landed in our laps. Please spread the word about our cause so this project can be completed. Love Leisa and Ian
