About

National Reconciliation Week: “Be Brave, Make Change”

Please help a traumatised Aboriginal youth stay out of prison.

‘W.L’ is a young First Nations man who cannot be identified on this platform due to the serious risk of his own safety.

For the past 10 years of his young life he has been at the forefront of supporting his family & community sharing his culture.

‘W.L’ has been until recently recognised as an emerging First Nations leader …. and he urgently needs our love & support NOW

TRIGGER WARNING: This story is a snapshot of his life over the past year…

‘W.L’ a young teen was badly bashed by his biological father and as a result became homeless. Had he been a female leaving a domestic violence situation he would have at least been given a support worker. He may have even been housed or placed in a refuge. As a young male youth …. he was isolated & traumatised.

‘W.L’ was left homeless, income-less and without adequate support. He was let down repeatedly by government bodies and NGO’s. He was left with no care and no support.

Every service he approached found excuses why they could not help him. After several suicide attempts this young man has still not been offered adequate support and is still waiting for mental health assessments and treatment.

While homeless and couch surfing ‘W.L’ was then brutally bashed by 14 youths who were unknown to him. After beating him with metal poles, their fists and kicking his head, they left him unconscious in the street. He was left with multiple facial fractures, severe bruising and was lucky to have survived. They had robbed him at knife point.

A couple of days later ‘W.L’ was charged with carrying a knife - which he was doing to protect himself from this “gang” of kids - he was terrified for his life - and he didn’t know that it was illegal to carry a knife to protect himself.

It is Reconciliation week - a theme of “Be Brave, Make Change”.

It’s supposed to be a week about learning and understanding Aboriginal history and contemporary struggles and working towards improving the lives of Aboriginal Australians.

It’s hard to feel positive about “celebrating” Reconciliation Week when this Aboriginal teen is looking at serving a jail sentence - because as a result of his terror & ongoing trauma & being harmed- and because he had no one to stand up for him or protect him.

‘W.L’ is looking at jail time because he has suffered MULTIPLE TRAUMAS as a victim of serious crime - has been racially profiled as a First Nations youth & has never been given any mental health support or a safe place to stay.

We are fundraising to get enough money together to help keep this young man out of jail & regain his confidence as an emerging leader in his Aboriginal community.

He will need a professional forensic Pyschologist report to give to the court to confirm his experiences as a victim of crime & trauma and to provide evidence pertaining to his current mental health & wellbeing.

These reports cost around $2000 each and ‘W.L’ is living off youth allowance at $500 a fortnight with $250 of that paying for caravan park fees: his temporary homeless accomodation.

Critically ‘W.L’ URGENTLY needs culturally responsive legal representation. Sadly the Aboriginal Legal Service (ALS) are not able or prepared to put up an adequate case. ‘W.L’ is left feeling ALS are prepared to see him go to jail and haven’t been able to refer him to any mental health services or Psychological report writing services.

The ALS will offer a minimum service and will not mount a comprehensive “case” & as such - will only turn up on the day doing the “bare minimum”.

To give this young teen the best chance & the best outcome: he will need to pay for private legal representation at a cost of approximately $4500.

If you are a professional Solicitor, Counsellor, Psychologist or Social Worker reading this or if you know of someone in your networks who may be willing to commit to some long term support pro bono then please make contact and I can put you in touch with the young person.

If you can donate some funds towards keeping this young teen out of jail so he has a chance towards recovery and a decent life please donate.

Make this Reconciliation week one where you’ve done something real to give a young black youth a fair chance.

Any funds raised above those needed for Pyschological report & legal representation will go towards his trauma informed mental health support and housing.

It is critical for this amazing young man and for the generations he will support and care for… that we care for him now.

Thank you for your generosity
