Four and a half years ago I lost my beloved dad to cancer. Dad was the strongest man I have ever known. Even during his battle and treatments all he cared about was his family and how he could still be a provider for us.
I have the privilege of heading up the Fitness and Recreation sector of the YMCA of Brisbane, and one of my proudest achievements with my team was the launch of our Cancer Survivor Program in August 2016.
This is a FREE 12 week exercise program where survivors attend the YMCA two times per week for a 60 minute session. The aim of the program is to empower cancer survivors to improve functional capacity and to increase their quality of life through an organised program of fitness and strength. Since 2016 our Y has helped over 600 survivors through our program at a cost to the Y of over $246,000. This program is not funded so I want to do my bit and help raise enough funds to support another 100 survivors through our program as well as honour my dad and his battle. That's why on July 3rd, I am going to run the Gold Coast Marathon! I'm 51 years old, wasn't a runner, but figured, if you are going to do something then go ALL IN. That's why I have set a big target of $10,000 for completing a big distance of 42.2Km. I know that whatever pain I go through, it's nothing compared to what my dad and people living with cancer go through each and every day.
