Raising funds for: Children and families in Afghanistan
We have felt helpless watching the news from Afghanistan and hearing pleas for help from our family and friends caught in the crisis. We started this campaign after seeing photos from our dear friend and colleague, Dr Mohammed, distributing blankets from his home to families sleeping in a local park. Now we want to get money directly to colleagues like Dr Mohammed to help those in need. You will have heard the news from Afghanistan - pictures of the Taliban in the Presidential palace, expatriates fleeing via the airport, and heavily armed fighters on the streets. But the real news is the people affected along the way. The UN estimates that over half a million people have been displaced by the war this year. Most are women and children. The families who are most desperate include those who are very poor, who don't have a male adult, who have children with injuries or disability, or who are from minority ethnic groups. Some of these families have nothing more than what they carried on their backs, no proper shelter, no blankets or spare clothes, no food. We have local colleagues who are already helping - distributing blankets, providing food and medicines, organising shelter. And we want to send money directly to support their life-giving work. More about us We are Hamish Graham and Mariam Tokhi, medical doctors based in Melbourne, Australia. We have a long-standing personal and professional connection to Afghanistan. Mariam's father migrated from Afghanistan during the communist era (before she was born) and, like many Afghan-Australian families, returns to spend time with cousins, uncles, and aunts when possible. As doctors and health researchers, we first worked in Afghanistan in 2012, seeking to improve hospital care for mothers, newborns, and children. More recently, we have been working with an Afghan community development group (RHDO) to support children and families living with disability. We will be responsible for getting your funds to RHDO, and other trusted groups in Afghanistan, who are providing urgent relief to children and families. The funds will be used to provide essentials such as food, clothing, blankets, and health care to those in need. All funds we receive will be spent directly on relief efforts (no overheads, no infrastructure costs, no directors fees, none of that). We will be transparent in sharing how much money is disbursed, what it is spent on, and who it benefits, and we will be giving our Afghan partners flexibility to disburse funds according to need. More about our colleagues in Afghanistan We were motivated to launch this campaign after hearing what our colleagues in Afghanistan are already doing to help their brothers and sisters. Dr Mohammed, who leads the local NGO with whom we have been working (RHDO), has been working tirelessly to help those in need using his own cash and giving away things from his own home. Having worked with Dr Mohammed and his team for three years I am constantly humbled by the selflessness and generosity of spirit that they display. While many other NGO leaders have left the country, Dr Mohammed and his colleagues chose to stay and continue helping people. Dr Mohammed and his team work closely with community members and leaders, identifying families in most need, and distributing resources accordingly. They are also part of the NGO coordination group that helps manage aid efforts and coordinate response with UN agencies. While our initial plan is to channel funds to Dr Mohammed and the RHDO team, we know there are other local groups striving to help their community and we will be open to distributing funds more widely depending on needs and capacity. Ultimately, our goal is to get help to affected children and families as directly and efficiently as possible, and we feel very fortunate to have amazing colleagues in Afghanistan who have made this possible. Our promise *We will send every dollar you donate to trusted local Afghan colleagues who are directly providing relief to children and families in need.  *We will be transparent and accountable, providing you with on how much money is sent, and how it is used, in comments below. *You can contact us on Twitter @GrahamHamish @mariamtokhi.

As the year draws to a close we wanted to thank you all for your generosity and support. Over the past 4 months, Dr Faiz and the team have done some extraordinary work in the most challenging of circumstances. Every week or two I catch up with him by phone, always leaving humbled and inspired. Today, Dr Faiz reflected on the past 6 months today. He said the financial support and encouragement from Australian donors back in August/September enabled critical work that has opened the door to so much more - "from a trickle to a flood". He then recounted the most amazing scope of work: - From relatively small-scale food and cash distribution to displaced people, Dr Faiz's team has now distributed thousands of tons of food aid (oil, flour, etc.) to over a million families across numerous provinces. (supported by World Food Program) - From humble equipment purchases and cash support to local maternity hospitals, Dr Faiz's team are now responsible for running hospitals and clinics in 12 provinces. (supported by Unicef) - From simple COVID messaging activities, Dr Faiz's team have established mobile health teams of doctors, nurses, psychosocial workers, nutritionists taking health to the community where health clinics have closed. (supported by WHO) However, this has been achieved under extraordinary circumstances. - The COVID19 pandemic continues to devastate communities, with vaccines really online becoming available in the past 2 months (currently 10% coverage). - Dr Faiz himself was hospitalised with a respiratory illness (probably COVID, but no testing was available) and thought he might die: "no oxygen, no x-ray, staff unpaid for months...". - The health sector has lost 90% of its funding and clinics and hospitals are crumbling - many staff continuing to work on a volunteer basis. - As winter descends the reality of famine is becoming clearer. "Every day we hear of more families trying to sell their children... so desperate" With the withdrawal of international NGOs and local aid and development leaders, Dr Faiz's team have found themselves on the frontline providing essential health and nutritional services across the whole country. Dr Faiz is now managing over 1800 local staff, and he rarely finds time to sleep. He sounded exhausted and I asked what we could do to help. He answered - "Your support has meant so much for us, please just keep remembering us". I've watched Afghanistan fade from headlines and the news cycle move on, but I hope that we will all carry Dr Faiz's voice with us. And when things seem overwhelming, remember people like Dr Faiz and the children and families for whom a small gesture can make a big difference.

Thank you again for all your messages of support and generous contributions! Today Dr M and the team completed a large-scale distribution of aid to 286 displaced families in Kabul. The distribution took place in partnership with the World Food Program (WFP), International Organisation for Migration (IOM), Danish Committee (Danish Committee for Aid to Afghan Refugees) and everything went smoothly and safely thank God. The distribution covered essential food, hygiene, and petty cash (for food and transport back to their villages if needed). Currently the UN and other large agencies are able to send material aid by road but are unable to transfer money into the country. So our cash contribution filled an important gap. We will continue to send all the money we raise in weekly installments, targeting the most critical needs identified by Dr M and the team.

A lot has happened in the past week, and we want to thank you all for your contributions and messages of support. Quick update. To date we have successfully transferred US$5000 (~$6800 AUD) to Dr M. The local team have registered over 100 families for immediate assistance, and are working with the UN and other groups to streamline efforts. The biggest challenges so far have been: (i) Access to money. Banks are operating but at low capacity with withdrawal limits of $200 per week and blocks on international transfers). After multiple dead ends we have successfully transferred via money lenders from the Afghan-Australian community but we will be doing it in batches to ensure it reaches Dr M. (ii) Security. Aside from the general insecurity, Dr M and team have been under pressure - particularly when people find out they have materials to distribute. They are working with other local groups to ensure people can receive help safely, but we acknowledge the risk that they are taking on to provide help. (iii) Escalating needs. While initial efforts have focussed on immediate material support for IDPs, other gaps are also emerging. I have encouraged the team to direct support to the priorities as they see them - ultimately we just want the best support for children and families.

Wow. We have been overwhelmed by your messages and generosity. Thank you so much. The team in Afghanistan are so grateful to know people are remembering them and want to help. I don't have many photos to share now, but here is a photo from earlier in the week of people camping out in one of the local parks. There was quite a bit of gunfire overnight, but quieter during the day. Today was a religious holiday, and some of the team managed to distribute some food donations. More to come...
