Fundraising for a young man called Isaac Mukisa to attend Uganda Christian University to study Journalism and Communications. We are currently raising for semester four, five and six. I've spent more than a decade filming people's stories. I've traveled to more than a few places too! Over ten years, I've spent two of them overseas holding a camera in my hand. I've witnessed communities overcome incredible hardships and spoken with mothers and children fleeing war. In 2019, I traveled to the dusty border town of Busia in far East Uganda. I was covering a story about the daily challenges kids face. Sitting in that empty classroom I heard from youth who had experienced the most horrific things. As I sat and listened to each story and my heart ached for these kids. When Isaac walked in carrying his well-used guitar, my mood shifted. He sang 'Amazing Grace' for us and spoke of how he overcame his circumstance and literally lifted himself out of the gutter. He found small work and carried buckets of water for hotels for 70 cents a day. From there he started helping out at his Church and enrolled in some training programs. No matter where we went over the next few days, Isaac was always close by wanting to help and learn more. Anything to do with cameras, lenses, tripods, microphones - Isaac wanted to know. One thousand questions about every aspect of my work. I realised that standing before me was a young man thirsty to learn and full of optimism - despite years of hardship. I was impressed! As I got to know him, I asked why he doesn't pursue his dream of becoming a journalist. His answer was simple and one that I already knew. When you have no money it means there is no chance for education. Since then our family (mostly my wonderful wife, Lisa Ralph) has been raising funds to give Isaac the education he deserves. As I write this post Isaac is sitting his exams and is two-thirds through his University Degree. We are so proud! We've held garage sales, sold countless flowers, and had generous support from extended family. To raise the last $4k we are going digital. We've set up a fundraising page so it's super easy to be part of his story. Isaac regularly shares updates on his progress. His words always convey his heart-touching thanks for being given such a rare chance. He remains incredulous that it has happened to him. Your support will power his determination to get his journalism degree!
