No Excuses: Benefit Concerts for Women’s Safety features an original choral suite for women, composed by Christina Green and Kathleen McGuire, inspired by true stories from women survivors of family violence. Funds raised will benefit Impact for Women, supporting women and children escaping extreme violence at home.
In 2015, through a Creative Victoria grant, Dr McGuire was invited to compose an inspirational work for women on the theme of family violence. She collaborated on the project with Dr Green, who was working as a music therapist in a women's shelter. True stories collected from women survivors of family violence became the inspiration for the choral suite, titled No Excuses! Women from all walks of life participated in performances, which brought joy, hope and healing to many.
Due to recent public attention on issues of women’s safety, No Excuses! will be revisited again, this time to raise funds for Impact for Women. This will comprise performances held online and live in 2021 and 2022.
All participants are volunteering their time and services. Australian Catholic University's Community Engagement is hosting the concerts. Participants will be drawn from ACU students, staff and alumnae as well as women from the wider community. The choir will also include a core group of women who sang the work previously.
