The iconic 765 metre long "Firth of Forth" look-a-like reinforced concrete structure was built between 1913 and 1915. It was used as a sewerage aqueduct until 1995 when it was bypassed by Barwon Water. The structure is heritage listed however Barwon Water have applied to demolish 4 spans. Over the last 30 years, the beautiful structure has been gradually hidden from Public view by tree planting and industrial land development. The Friends of the Barwon River Ovoid Sewer Aqueduct has written a submission to Heritage Victoria opposing the demolition application. We believe spending $7.5k for a sign on the side of a bus, with a picture of the Aqueduct and the words "Save Geelong's Aqueduct" will increase people's now almost zero awareness of the iconic structure. It will hopefully generate government funds to preserve the Aqueduct and to develop a park on the banks of the Barwon River adjacent to the Aqueduct.
