Will you give up one coffee for a portaloo? St Kilda Cycling Club is raising funds to hire an accessible portable toilet.
From October - April, SKCC attracts over 200 people of all ages and abilities to our Sunday morning criterium* races in South Melbourne. As we don't have a permanent venue we hire portaloos to service the needs of our members, friends and spectators...but they don't!!
=>We all celebrated the achievements of our Paralympic medalists, Carol Cooke and Stuart Tripp, but we don't have conveniences they can access.
=>Parents with young children are forced to have the door open onto the race circuit...hardly childsafe.
=> We have all had a friend with a mobility affecting injury (or been there ourselves) - try navigating those steps on crutches or with a walking stick. Prams, wheelchairs or walking frames...forget it.
Accessible portaloo hire is 3 times that of a standard unit and is beyond the reach of our not-for-profit, community based club resources. We have applied for a number of grants, but being operational funding, we fall through the gaps and have been unsuccessful.
Please help... SKCC takes pride in the diversity of our members and supporters and is determined to improve the accessibility of cycling to all.
Give up one coffee this week and donate. Together we can make our conveniences, convenient.
*Criteriums ("crits") are short, fast, technical races on a 1km circuit. Races are conducted for a period of time (usually 20-60 min) plus 3 laps, and are great spectator events.
SKCC is raising money to hire an accessible portaloo for our summer race season.
Standard portaloos don't service the needs of our growing numbers of young families, super Paralympic medal winners, or injured members and spectators.
