Simone's Story
It all began in March 2014 when Simone started to experience severe headaches and noticed her balance was unsteady, although she didn’t realise these symptoms were a warning sign to a greater condition that would have a strong impact on her future health and life. Four months later Simone was visiting a friend in Airlie beach and at this point her symptoms were worsening though she still thought nothing of it, until her body eventually gave up. One night she went out for dinner and suddenly started to convulse and became unconscious, Simone was immediately rushed to the hospital where they did a CT scan that showed she had a build up of fluid in her brain which was caused by a tumour in the back of her head and was told that she required an emergency operation to save her life. Due to being in a remote area there weren’t any surgeons available, therefore a surgeon from the Townsville hospital was flown in to perform this emergency procedure. Simone was heavily sedated as she was driven to the Townsville hospital where she remained in the intensive care unit and to the doctors surprise regained consciousness the next day where her family who had flown up from Melbourne were waiting by her side.
A week later Simone then had her second operation to remove the brain tumour. The procedure was successful and Simone was recovering well until her and her family received the results which revealed that the tumour was malignant and was a Grade 4 Medulloblastoma, which was uncommon to find in a 24 year old due to being a childhood tumour. From that day forward Simone began the fight of her life; with determination, hope and support she believed that she would conquer this disease.
It has now been 12 months that Simone has been on the journey in battling her fight against brain cancer and has recently undergone her second operation to remove the tumour. This operation occurred exactly 12 months after her initial procedure in Townsville, and was located in the same position of her brain which was successfully removed.
Throughout this journey Simone has been taken down a path completely foreign to what she has known and experienced and has had to adopt a new way of living. Simone has had to relinquish the rights of a 25 year old as everything has been placed on pause; having to stop studying, working and doing things that she thought she would be doing at this stage of her life. Having such a dramatic change has created a physical, emotional and financial impact which has caused her family and friends to come together and help support Simone to beat this fight!
