At the age of 40, Tara was diagnosed with scleroderma and even though she was working as a Nurse Practitioner candidate, had no idea what scleroderma was. In 2010 Tara had to retire and move to Queensland, due to the disability that scleroderma had caused. Now with a new group of friends and the support of her family, She is proudly advocating for the scleroderma community. As the deputy chair of Scleroderma Australia and lead of Scleroderma Queensland, seeing every day the strength of her community, but also the challenges, especially in the colder months. Winter is particularly tough for people with scleroderma. The cold isn’t just uncomfortable; it can be painful, isolating and, at times, overwhelming.
That’s why she is taking part in Snuggle Up for Scleroderma 2026.
The funds we raise go directly toward supporting our specialist scleroderma nurses, an essential lifeline for so many people navigating this complex condition. These nurses provide care, guidance, and reassurance when it’s needed most, and we need to ensure this support continues.
Throughout her journey with scleroderma Tara says she reflected many times on how fortunate she was to have so many fabulous people in her life. Particularly within the Sunshine Coast Show Choir and the scleroderma community across Queensland. She often talks about the value that singing has, not only physically in helping the battle with Interstitial lung disease, but emotionally. Knowing that she is valued, even with the losses that Scleroderma has brought.
This year, Tara with Scleroderma Queensland's support is hosting an event on Sunday the 28th of June at a picnic place on the coast, where people will come together and sing and share a picnic lunch to raise awareness and funds.
Tara and others will update you all with the location once the council gives approval.
Please share this opportunity to make a difference through social media, as every little bit helps us support those going through this condition.
We will make sure to share some pictures up to the event as well.
Tag us on Instagram and help us spread the warmth across our community.
Together, we can turn something as simple as getting cosy into something powerful, raising awareness, building connection, and supporting those living with scleroderma.
Thank you for helping me make a difference.
