The Scrap Heap Adventure project gives students in the Lomandra School Automotive Elective Class the opportunity to develop practical automotive skills through hands-on learning in basic maintenance, workshop safety, and teamwork. As a school, Lomandra provides quality education for students with Behaviour Disorders in a safe and inclusive environment. Through positive behaviour support and restorative practices, students are encouraged to make good choices while growing socially and emotionally.

Update
25 May 2026
Today in Automotive, we continued working on our exciting Scrapheap Challenge motorbike project. The students rolled up their sleeves and got stuck into stripping the bike down even further. This week we removed the plastic panels, bash plates, and hand grips and to our surprise, this old bike even had heated grips! Some parts were definitely a challenge to remove, with many of the screws and bolts heavily rusted after the bike had spent years lying on its side in a paddock under a tree. Despite the challenges, the students showed fantastic teamwork, persistence, and problem-solving skills to get the job done. After last week’s encounters with the many creatures that had made the bike their home, including the very large spider that gave quite a few of us a fright, this week we came prepared with plenty of spray! But of course, wasn’t needed. Everyone got their hands dirty helping to clean out years of dirt, leaves, mud, and other waste that had built up inside and around the bike. We also removed the fuel tank and air box, and surprisingly, the inside of the air box was incredibly clean! It has been great to see the student’s building confidence with tools, learning new mechanical skills, and working together to bring this forgotten motorbike back to life. Keep following our Scrapheap Challenge adventures — who knows what surprises and discoveries next week will bring!
Update
19 May 2026
Today students began assessing the condition of our bike - it's lived for 5 yrs under a tree in the bush, the last 2 on its side.....Seeing the plastics were broken we decided to remove them...but quickly decided we need to purchase a can of BUG spray after fighting off giant Spiders. The confined spaces mean we should probably buy a socket set too.
