In 2012, four people ran from Marathon to Athens in Greece to draw attention to the neglect of, and violence against, stray animals in that country. Each year, more and more people joined in from different countries. Known as the Penny Marathon, the annual event now takes place in cities around the world, and is hosted by volunteers who want to raise awareness of the plight of all suffering animals. The Penny Marathon is a registered international charity and is wholly run by volunteers. In 2025, it will take place on Saturday, 12 July in Sydney and Sunday, 13 July in cities throughout Greece. This is our 14th year!
