Details about what we are raising money for:
Brain Disease
- Dementia is the second leading cause of death in Australia.
- The number of people with Dementia is expected to grow by over 20% within just 5 years.
- The number of people with Parkinson’s has increased by 17% in the last six years with costs to the community increasing by over 48%.
Brain Cancer
- Around 1600 people are diagnosed with Brain cancer in Australia annually and approximately 1200 die from the disease every year.
- Brain Cancer kills more children in Australia than any other disease.
- Brain Cancer kills more people under 40 in Australia than any other cancer.
- Very little is known about Brain cancer, its causes or how to treat it.
- Brain cancer survival rates are low and have hardly changed for 30 years. Despite significant increase for Australian diagnosed with other types of cancer, such as prostate and breast cancer.
- Treatment is challenging because it affects our most important organ.
- Brain cancer costs more per person than any other cancer, yet only receives a small fraction of federal government cancer research funding.

Why am I fundraising for The Brain Foundation?
My big sister, Camilla died of an oligoastrocytoma Dec 14, 2011.
She was diagnosed in 2005 when it was a benign oligodendroglioma.
Camilla underwent 3 awake brain surgeries and multiple courses of radiology and chemotherapy across those 6 years – and she was one of the “Lucky” ones.
It has taken so long for me to get my head around what happened and I think now I am in a space where I really want to make a difference to this underfunded, mysterious, horrific cancer that affects humans most vital organ.
Maybe it is because there are so many similarities between myself and Camilla now, I am turning 33 this year – my sister died at 33.
Camilla has a child and I now have a child...... It's just that I am alive and she is not.
This has motivated me to do something about it – and raise funds for charity organisations that are doing vital research into brain disease and brain cancer.
So Please - Myself and many, many other people out there that are affected by brain disease, brain tumours and brain cancer really need more research to go into what we can do.
Thanks in advance,
Sophia
