Intrepid members of the Tasmanian Rangers Association are tackling a 525 kilometre relay through Tasmania’s wild heart to raise funds for our colleagues in Timor-Leste. The trip will traverse high alpine passes through Cradle Mountain – Lake Saint Clair National Park, mountain biking through the Florentine Valley, crossing Lake Pedder by sea kayak and finally through to the beaches of the iconic South Coast Track to emerge at Cockle Creek, in Tasmania’s deep south. Nino Konis Santana is Timor – Leste’s only National Park, and local Rangers need to urgently replace their motorcycles which are beyond repair, but are critical to preserving this unique area.
Update

The Southwests reputation for testing weather was lived up to on the Port Davey Track section of the relay. Heavy rains forced the team of five to have a day stranded between swollen creeks at Spring River, about v45 km from the track head. The crew forged on the next day, in one place in chest deep water for an hour, trying to find their way along the flooded track. Eventually back on dry(ish) land they were faced with The Narrows row boat crossing across the entrance to Bathurst Harbour. All made it to Melaleuca, still in good spirits and no doubt with a few stories to tell !

With the Lake Pedder kayak leg over, the next team has just passed the 400 km mark! Now on the remote Port Davey Track, they are racing the weather to get past the many creek and river crossings before the forecast rain kicks in. One more change of team members at Melaleuca on the first, then the home run along the South Coast Track. Keep spreading the word folks !
Update
23 Oct 2021
Today we reached the halfway point in the relay, 260km down and 260km to go! The teams have been pushing through all sorts of weather and obstacles but are still going strong. All at the TRA would like to sincerely thank everyone that has been a part of it so far by making donations. Every single one has helped us towards our goal. Please keep spreading the word and help us get to our target of $25 000. Thanks again !

Congratulations to all the participants in the TRA relay. There was some pretty rugged weather throughout the month long traverse of the island. Great way to raise awareness of the lesser funded parks agencies abroad - and have a significant impact on the Timor-Leste rangers ability to conserve the park.
