The Skin Hospital, formerly known as the Skin & Cancer Foundation Australia, is a not-for-profit benevolent organisation dedicated to improving the lives of people affected by diseases of the skin through excellence in clinical services, research and education.
The concept of the Skin & Cancer Foundation began in the early 1970s, when leading dermatologists in New South Wales proposed establishing a Foundation to advance academic dermatology in Australia. In 1976, this vision became a reality thanks to Dr Ken Paver, together with Drs Ken Poyzer, Ray King and Ron Spencer, who opened the Foundation’s first clinic within the St Vincent’s Hospital Medical Centre.
Since then, the Foundation, now The Skin Hospital, has earned a reputation as a centre of excellence in the clinical management of skin disease and in dermatology research and education. We operate two major consulting and day-surgery facilities in Darlinghurst and Westmead, as well as a rural outreach service in Dubbo, providing vital dermatology care to regional communities.
Both metropolitan sites house the largest private tertiary referral centres for Mohs surgery in the southern hemisphere, specialising in complex dermatological procedures. Our Mohs Proceduralists are fully qualified dermatologists who have undertaken additional subspecialty training in Mohs micrographic surgery after completing their specialist qualification.
The Skin Hospital has a proud history of reinvesting all profits back into the organisation to fund education, clinical trials and research, ensuring the ongoing advancement of dermatological science and patient care.
Our Clinical Trials and Research Unit, led by Associate Professor John Frew, conducts multiple clinical trials and supports a wide range of research projects recognised on both national and global stages. This work continues to expand the understanding and treatment of skin disease, from inflammatory and autoimmune conditions to skin cancers and rare disorders.
We are also proud to be the largest training facility for dermatology registrars in New South Wales, nurturing the next generation of dermatologists through hands-on experience, mentorship and exposure to leading research and clinical practice.
