Our history
Assisi was founded more than 20 years ago. In the early 1990s, the leaders of Melbourne’s Italian community recognised a need to set up specialised aged care services to support Melbourne’s fast-growing elderly Italian population.
As a result, Assisi Centre Inc. was established as a not for profit religious and charitable aged care organisation. Assisi was able to obtain the beautiful Rosanna Road property, a 1920s Sisters of Mercy novitiate convent. The Commonwealth Government granted Assisi Centre 120 residential aged care beds; the first 90 beds were opened in 1993.
Our latest $21Million upgrade increases our capacity to 150 beds, This shows our commitment to offering the best and most up to date services for the Italian community. There are plans to further expand our services, including an onsite retirement village with a wide range of attached amenities. We would be very pleased to show you what the future will bring.
As a not for profit Commonwealth-accredited aged care provider, we are governed by a committee of management of 12 members of Italian background from Melbourne’s business and cultural community. We look forward to being the preferred option for accommodation and care services for Italians in Melbourne for years to come.
Our mission
We understand that the decision to enter an aged care home is difficult for all concerned. We see these situations every day, and most of us have been involved ourselves. Entering aged care is a significant life choice, often made when least expected and usually decided by the family as a whole.
Part of our mission is to try and help you any way we can at all times during the process. Our Family Support Program is one of the ways we can help during the transition. In the end, the Assisi Centre team wants every resident and family to feel very much at home, looked after and well cared for.
