Polio Australia is dedicated to supporting those affected by polio living in Australia. Our mission is to ensure that all polio survivors have access to appropriate health care and the support required to maintain independence and make informed lifestyle choices.

Deirdre passed away from Post Polio Syndrome (PPS) on 21 Nov 2024, just 3 years after the first signs of the onset of the Late Effects of Polio (LEoP). 

In South Australia, there are currently no Post-Polio Syndrome specialists, nor are there any allied health teams with the knowledge & training to provide appropriate & accessible care through the hospital system. 

The health minister is of the opinion that PPS can be managed by existing rehab specialists & their teams. However, Deirdre discovered first hand that they had little to no awareness or understanding of PPS, nor any clinical knowledge or training in suitable approaches to manage/mitigate its effects.  

Polio Australia & Polio SA are therefore vital sources of information, support & advocacy for people grappling with PPS/LEoP. Please make a donation to support their work, so that other polio survivors may receive better health care outcomes than Deirdre did.
