Rescuing responsibly
At Fetching Dogs, we truly believe that every dog should be viewed as an individual. Before the dog even comes into care, we assess it to ensure there are no issues that we cannot responsibly deal with.
We assess each dog on its own and decide which foster home to place with, what training is needed, and what the best options are to ensure the dog is eventually ready for rehoming. We also don’t place emphasis on breed, so there can be no preconceptions about the individual dog.
While in foster care
The dog is given a comfortable, loving home where it can begin to adapt to a home life again. Some dogs are very quick to relax, while others may take longer. All of our dogs are kept in care for a minimum of two weeks so we can assess behaviour and health.
The carer provides basic obedience and a stable environment for the dog. This helps us give advice to prospective adopters on what the dog could be like in their own home.
All the necessities
While in care, the dog will receive all basic vetwork. This includes desexing, heartworm testing and treating, microchipping, vaccinations, worming, and flea treatment. Any other medical requirements are provided immediately.
We have a network of vet clinics that are on hand to help us if/when needed, to ensure each dog is given a high level of care.
Looking for that perfect home
We like to give our dogs the best chance at being discovered. We advertise on our own website (and keep it up to date), as well as on PetRescue and Facebook/Twitter. We utilise every tool available to us find that perfect home.
We even give them uncommon names so they stand out more in a crowd (we’re quite known for our name choices).
The adoption procedure
All applicants go through a series of steps to ensure all relevant checks are completed and we know we’re doing the best we can for the dogs in our care. The procedure, however, is quite simple. All families must complete an adoption enquiry, we then follow that up with a phone call, and if all sounds good, the family comes to meet the dog.
Our carers will also give their opinion and if everyone is happy, we organise a yard check to ensure the property is secure. All dogs go on a four week adoption trial, so they can have time to settle in, and the family can be sure it’s going to be a good fit.
