Birth for Humankind is a Melbourne-based non-profit, established in 2014. We provide free support and education for pregnant women experiencing social and economic disadvantage.
Every woman should have access to the care and support she needs during pregnancy, birth and early parenting so that’s what we do. With our team of highly trained volunteer doulas (birth support companions), we have provided over 200 women with dedicated doula support to date.
43% of the women we support are from refugee and asylum seeker backgrounds. 13% are experiencing homelessness or housing uncertainty during their pregnancy. 28% are under 23. 40% are experiencing or at-risk of experiencing perinatal anxiety and depression. All of them are experiencing poverty or extreme financial hardship.
With the support of our doulas, women who would otherwise have little to no support during this critical time feel less isolated, less alone, more confident and more prepared to birth their babies into the world.
