Save the Children has been running programs in Australia for more than 60 years.
Save the Children started helping children in Australia in the 1950’s. Our first Australian programs focused on early education for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander children. With significant growth since then, we now run education and child protection programs for disadvantaged communities at 100 sites around the country. Learn more about our history.
With a national office in Melbourne, and state offices in Queensland,Tasmania, New South Wales, Victoria, Western Australia, South Australiaand the Northern Territory, we run programs and events that support communities at a local level.
Why we work in Australia
More than 17 percent of Australian children fall below the poverty line. Despite Australia's wealth and high standard of living, many children struggle to reach their potential because they don't have access to education, healthcare and protection services.
Our Australian programs
From early learning programs which help newly arrived migrant and refugee children settle into Australia, to initiatives that help young people transition out of youth detention, Save the Children works to ensure the rights of all children are upheld.
Working under our global vision for all children to achieve their right to a quality education, we run Early Childhood Care and Development programs for children under five years old, work to improve access to school for disadvantaged children – in particular, children from Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander communities – and provide youth engagement initiatives for at-risk young people.
We offer parenting support programs to reduce the risk of child abuse and neglect, and protect children and mothers who have experienced family violence.
