In 2023 my grandfather passed away from Alzheimer's. He was a good man with strong morals and a kind heart, who deserved to live his life after retiring to the fullest, indulging in his passions and watching his absolute pride and joy, his grandkids, grow up in this world. Instead, he would spend his time struggling against dementia, unable to partake in his favourite pastime playing golf, or watch his beloved Port Power on the TV, or even string a few words together to form a sentence. I lost my grandfather before he even passed. This is a condition I wouldn't wish upon the worst of people. But together we can make a change.

Hey there! I’m gearing up for a half marathon, and no, I’m not trying to break any land speed records! But there's a much bigger reason for this race: I’m running to raise money for Alzheimer’s Research Australia.

A few years ago, I decided to take up running – mostly to prove to myself I could do it. Along the way, I set myself a goal to complete 20 half marathons. This year’s HBF Run for a Reason will be half marathon number 20, and I thought, what better way to mark the occasion than by raising funds for a cause close to my heart? My dad is currently living with dementia, which makes this cause even more personal for me. Alzheimer’s, a common form of dementia, is a disease that affects so many people. So, while I’ll be sweating and definitely questioning my life choices at kilometre 12, I’m doing it all for a cause that matters.

I’d love for you to join me on this journey! A donation, whether it’s the price of a fancy coffee or a big ol' chunk of change, will help fund important research. Every little bit counts, and you’ll be helping me keep going (because, trust me, I’m going to need it!).

I have chosen three charities for everyone to choose from as a way to honour Gloria Jean Nash and her spirit of caring for others. These charities are:

3. Cat People of Melbourne

Dementia is THE leading cause of death in Australian women, and the 2nd in Australians. 10% of people over 65, and 30% over 85, have a form of dementia. Without significant medical breakthroughs, over 6.4 million Australians could be diagnosed with dementia in the next 40 years.

Mum worked with YOTS in its early days and was passionate about its work. YOTS is a charity working with young people, their families and communities to create safety, offer support and provide opportunities to build a positive future. They focus on early interventions and services to empower young people and strengthen communities. 

I love cats and mum certainly did not (although she loved our baby). She told me I would know if she was angry with me when she died if I had found in her will that she "left it all to the cat home". We shared a dark sense of humor, and this is a lovely, small volunteer-run charity. They provide adoption, rehoming, advice and support, in addition to foster care and assisted owner rehoming. They focus on ensuring our cats and kittens are matched to their perfect humans and homes.
