Raising funds for: Leanne Hanson
Leanne is my sis-in-law, well not officially, but she and my brother, Grant, have been together for fourteen years. They live with the two kids, Michael and Elizabeth, who are seventeen and fifteen, respectively. At that time in their lives when they’re both trying to find their own way, their Mum has been diagnosed with cancer. Leanne is currently unable to work, and Grant has taken a lot of time off to support and care for her. Leanne’s parents also live nearby, they’re retired and have offered their support wherever they can. Leanne’s cancer journey so far: In November 2018 (after months of severe pain and several visits to her doctor), Leanne was diagnosed with a tumour in the bladder. Initially, the advice from the specialist was that she would undergo simple surgery to have the tumour removed and the chances were, everything would be fine. This, however, turned out not to be the case. After surgery in December, Leanne was advised that the small, ‘slow-growing’ tumour they had expected to find, was actually large and aggressive, and had completely taken over her bladder. Further scans revealed the cancer had metastasised to her liver, lymph-nodes and lungs. She would have to undergo a course of chemotherapy, and possibly immunotherapy before the primary cancer could be removed. At the end of December, Leanne unfortunately became very ill. A complication from the cancer meant she needed more surgery. Post-op emergency chemotherapy followed, the effects of which, combined with the recovery from surgery meant she spent most of January in hospital. Over the past five months, Leanne has undergone more surgery, six rounds of chemotherapy and has been in and out of hospital due to side-effects from the treatment. Her physical health has deteriorated, she has lost a lot of weight, muscle mass, stamina and strength. Constant pain has also been a factor, not to mention the mental battle that she goes through on a daily basis. It has not all been doom and gloom. I have seen great strength in Leanne, and the strength and determination I have seen in Grant, I did not think was possible. On good days, Leanne has been venturing out to appointments and places that she feels comfortable visiting. Also, a follow-up scan two months ago showed the chemo was working well – the masses in her liver, lymph-nodes and lungs have shrunk. This was fantastic news and we definitely celebrated the win! However, there is still a long way to go… I am confident Leanne will get better in time. Until this happens, I just want her to be free from as much worry as possible; to feel comfortable and supported. Grant and Leanne have never asked me – or anyone else – for anything. They’re very private people (I had to beg them to let me write this) who enjoy the simple things in life. They have been my support crew and it’s now my turn to return that love. I have decided to split the funds I raise between bladder cancer research and Leanne, to contribute to cost of outpatient treatments, medications, care and generally to see her through this tough time. I am asking from the bottom of my heart that you donate. In return, I will continue my running journey for the rest of this year. Next up is ten kilometre runs, a five kilometre with family and friends in August, aiming for a half-marathon in September. This will be a massive challenge for me, but it’s nothing in comparison to what Leanne, Grant and the kids face every single day. I will keep you posted on Leanne’s journey and my running throughout the year. Thank you so much, in advance, Debz XXXX

28.10.19 - Final Update. In memory of Leanne. Grant and I had the pleasure to meet the amazing research team from QLD Bladder Cancer Institute. Their facility, care, dedication and passion for bladder cancer is inspirational. We learned that they are trying to develop an early diagnostic test, push for specific bladder cancer nurses within oncology wards and patient individualised treatments. We donated $6,000 raised through Leanne’s Journey which they were very grateful for and advised that this will go a long way into research for this underfunded cancer. We have also donated $5,000 to Bladder Cancer Awareness Australia for patients & families experiencing this horrible disease. Thanks again to all of you for donating & helping to support these fabulous people, so they can continue to dedicate their work to bladder cancer research & awareness. I also thank Leanne for her bravery and encouraging me to do this for her. It has been an experience, that is for sure... We will continue to raise awareness and I may even do some more runs to promote this cause next year. XXXX

I RAN ALL THE WAY FOR YOU LEANNE - I completed the half marathon on 15.9.19 in 2 hrs: 22 mins: 55 seconds, I am stoked! I know you would be proud. I write this with very mixed emotions as Leanne was supposed to be here to partly enjoy some of the funds raised, we really did believe that she would get well. I guess if you don’t have hope, what do you have?! After Leanne was diagnosed, I felt so helpless, the more unwell she became the more helpless we became. I wanted to do something for them and pledging to run the half marathon as a way to raise funds and awareness was my way of being able to do something to help. I have really not seen it as inspirational. Although I do very much appreciate and thank everyone for their love, support, encouragement, donations and beautiful heartfelt comments. Leanne’s bravery whilst battling this awful illness was inspirational and Grant and the kids unconditional love, support and dedication to Leanne, as well as, their strength to do life without her has been inspirational. So, raising funds and running a half marathon was just a little bit of somethings to help. I am so grateful to Leanne and Grant for many things, too many to name. I thank them for allowing me to do this for them and share Leanne’s Journey. I do believe that this pledge to Leanne has really helped me to deal with losing Leanne in a more positive way. I will thank Leanne every single day for her insights as I feel that she has inspired me to grow as a person. Leanne also made a massive difference to others through her career as a teacher, her life as a poet and through her online presence. I actually did not realise what an impact she had made until she passed and some of her friends, students and online connections reached out to us, she was very humble about that. Leanne was a beautiful person who will always have a place in my heart, I will forever miss her and be grateful to have known her so well. Cheers Deb

9.9.19 Hi, well it's only 6 sleeps until my half marathon. I'm not going to lie it's been tough going, especially the last couple of weeks as I've been increasing the distance significantly BUT I think I'm ready!!! I also didn't think I'd be nervous about this but I am. This is my last pledge for people to get behind me and support this cause which was so important to Leanne and us. The pic was a group of us doing the color run a few weeks ago for Leanne. She is so missed. Thanks again so far for all your support. Deb XXX

25.7.19 Wow again I am so thankful, together we have raised $10,000+. Now that target has been reached I have increased it to the highest number I can get - ha ha! I had been back on tack with my training until this week. I’ve had a minor set back (nothing major just a nasty mole cut from my back - didn’t even know it was there when I went for a routine check). This procedure was minimal, however very important. Sending the message to everyone to know your body and get checked. Yet again it puts things in perspective and has reminded me how strong people can be and also how much I miss Leanne’s heart. It’s only 7 weeks to race day for me but a few weeks from a group of us doing the color run. We are so very determined to do this for Leanne. Grant and I have been talking with a bladder cancer charity (BCA Australia - bcaaustralia.or.au), also have a fb page - please like) who have been very generous to Grant over this time. We hope to be doing some work with them in future and returning the generosity. The pictures I have chosen: Michael - when he was wee and cheeky. As he turns 18 in 2 weeks - OMG! We have plans to celebrate with him and are looking forward to a fun day! Elizabeth and Kai - the new family member. Grant and Leanne had decided they wanted to get a new pup, so Elizabeth and him thought they’d better honour her wish. He is an angel in disguise... yes, in disguise! Help me make a difference. xxxx

8.7.2019. So today is my Birthday and usually Leanne would decorate the house with balloons and banners for me and cook me a traditional birthday curry, followed by cake of course! Today that will not happen when I arrive back to the GC after my trip. However, I’ve decided to not be sad about that and remember the years that I did have a wonderful birthday at Leanne and Grants house because she was really good at spoiling me and making me feel special! This pic is of Leanne doing some rehab during chemo, it has reminded me today that if you put your mind to something, no matter how hard you can achieve it. I’ll be honest since Leanne passed I have not been overly motivated with my half marathon training and am 4 weeks behind but today I have written an updated plan and if I put in the effort and the distance I will achieve it just like she knew I would. Please donate, it really will help my motivation. I’m only $400 away from my target. Raising awareness for bladder cancer and research is so important to me & our families. Thank you. X

12.6.2019. My beautiful Sister in Law and best friend passed away this afternoon. We are all absolutely heart broken. Closest friends and family were by her side. Grant, Michael and Elizabeth are so amazed with all the love and support that they have received. Thanks to all who have been in touch so far. Leanne and Grant decided before she passed that all funds raised here are to go to bladder cancer research and some to the staff at Griffith University Hospital oncology ward C1 East for them to have an amazing night out. They were there with them every step of the way and each visit and hospital stay became closer and closer to them. They felt like they really cared for Leanne. That is the kind of selfless person Leanne was, Grant too. Leanne put up the best fight she could and she did it her way! Heaven has received another angel today. XXX

Dear All, unfortunately Leanne took a turn for the worst last night and is back in hospital. Her status is not great as her cancer has progressed and the treatment plan is no longer an option. She is comfortable and pain free. Today close family, friends (my parents via FaceTime) and the wonderful oncology ward staff came together to organise and attend a beautiful marriage ceremony. We are so grateful to a family friend, Liz, who is a marriage celebrant and helped to make their marriage legally binding at such short notice. It was perfect and to see the smile on both their faces was so beautiful. Congratulations to Mr and Mrs Wilson. I love you both so much and am so proud of you. Again thanks to those who have donated. Leanne made it clear today that she wants more research done into her type of cancer and also would like everyone that can to please give blood. So I better keep running eh?! Debz xxxx

Firstly, I’d like to congratulate Grant & Leanne on their engagement. They have decided to get married in a small ceremony & celebration in July. Pic is Grant & Leanne a few years ago when they took me out to spoil me for my birthday. Leanne is home from hospital & doing okay. This week is all about getting stronger to be able to attend treatment on Friday. We hope that immunotherapy will make her feel better. I completed my 10km today. Thanks all for your support & encouragement. Next up I aim to double it to a half marathon, by then I am also hoping to have doubled what has been raised so far. More research needs to be done into bladder cancer, they do not know enough! Again, thank you to all who have donated and sent love, thoughts & well wishes to the family. We say this from the bottom of our hearts.

Wow everyone, thank you so much for the generous donations so far. Leanne and Grant are overwhelmed. Update on Leanne: Unfortunately this week Leanne has been admitted to hospital again (we have lost count of how many time this year so far). She is very unwell with a suspected virus or infection, her treatment team are currently trying to get to the bottom of what is going on. Grant, as usual, is by her side. This picture was of Leanne a couple of months ago when she was having her chemotherapy treatment. I have registered for the 10km Griffith University Logan Fun Run (it really will not be that much Fun!), which I will take part in on 9th June. Thanks again for all your support so far. Debz xxx
