About

Angel’s Care School is located in the Kyaka 2 Refugee Settlement - an 82 Square Km plot of land in Western Uganda designated for refugee settlement. It is a privately funded and managed school, the only one of its kind in the settlement.
Founded in 2008, it started with around 30 students but as of 2017 has a total enrolment of 750 students and 16 full time staff. A majority of the students are refugees originating from Congo, Rwanda, Burundi, and other surrounding countries. The school itself is situated amid a beautiful landscape complete with rolling green hills and luscious foliage.

Being privately funded means it does not receive as much funding as most other schools in the settlement do from the UNHCR. This very much affects the infrastructure of the school as they have been responsible for constructing their own buildings and dorms. They also do not receive nearly as much funding as other schools do for teacher salaries - there are currently 16 full time teachers and 4 part time workers of which only 3 are supported by the UNHCR. Management of the school could easily decide to lower the amount of teachers, but firmly believe in a low student to teacher ratio and this surprisingly progressive mindset has lead Angel’s Care School to achieve the highest academic performance above all other schools in the entire settlement!

The director and founder of Angels Care School is Byaruhanga Godfrey. For years Godfrey worked for the Office of the Prime Minister in refugee settlement and has since decided to fully commit himself to the school and community. The school itself is very much connected with the surrounding community around the settlement. Godfrey and his team work tirelessly to come up with creative and sustainable ways of supporting the school and accommodating as many children as possible. Every project that supports the school equally supports the community and is intertwined with the economy and well being of the residents.

Because of its high academic achievements, many parents wish for their children to attend Angel’s Care. Of course, being situated in a refugee settlement, funds are not always available to pay for their children's school fees and so the issue of being unable to come up with funds for supplies, food, and wages is an ever present threat. To combat this, the option is there for parents to work as labourers on certain projects to cover their children's school fees.

If it were up to Godfrey and his team, they would take in every single child, but unfortunately the limitations of their current infrastructure has put a hold to enrolment until they are able to raise enough funds to increase classroom sizes and construct larger buildings. Desks that are meant to only hold 3 children are currently at double capacity, and the classrooms themselves would not be able to hold any more students.

The school also currently supports 105 unaccompanied refugee orphans that live in on-site dormitory buildings. These children truly have nothing - no family and no money - so the school makes every effort to support them with food, housing, and education. This truly is the heart of Angels Care School - to support the vulnerable when they cannot support themselves.

The important thing to consider when supporting a community like this is to have a full understanding of what the actual needs really are. Fortunately Godfrey and his team understand the true needs of the school and community - sustainability. The vision for Angel’s Care School is to be completely self-sufficient. This means projects and systems that are put into place which both provide an income for the school as well as benefitting the refugee community - one cannot succeed without the other. As seen in the various projects listed such as the Solar Energy project and Charcoal Briquette production, the concepts and plans are already in place. Angel’s Care has a plan to break free of dependency on other groups that they are currently sub contracting work out to and move into a state of true self-sufficiency, which in most cases looks like ownership of machinery, but they need funding to get started.

The list of needs has been created to show potential donors exactly how funds will be used. Plans have been written up, target deadlines have been set, and suppliers are literally waiting to be given the go-ahead on certain projects. Please read through each project description to get a full understanding of the vision that Angel’s Care has, and if you feel specifically inclined to support a certain project, please let us know and we will make sure that any donations you make will go straight to that project.

Past financial records and spending reports are also available for those who wish to get involved on a larger scale - Angels Care will always strive for total transparency with it’s donors.
The staff and students at Angel’s Care School are so thankful for everyone that has taken the time to support them. This truly is an amazing community that has come together in the midst of civil unrest, poverty, and war.
If you would like to get involved in other ways please do get in contact. Plans have also been made to accommodate volunteers, and if organising a trip to the school interests you the team here would love to speak with you.

Project Details

This list has been compiled with Angel’s Care staff to best reflect the most prevalent needs of the school and to give better insight into each individual need as it affects the children and staff of Angel’s Care and the surrounding community. Needs listed by severity.

What
New Classroom Desks

Why
There are currently two limitations that are immediately affecting the physical classes - Classroom building size and amount of desks. Angel’s Care currently has desks that were donated by the UNHCR but the amount of students that Angel’s has taken in does not match the amount of desks. Currently a desk that is only meant to hold 3 students is holding 6-7 students at once. In fact in some classes students are having to stand throughout the class because there is simply no room for them. The packed desks also affect writing ability for students as they do not have nearly enough arm room. The first way to fix this problem is by getting more desks that can be spread throughout the classrooms or, when the rooms are already full, use the desks in outdoor settings to accommodate more children.

Amount Needed = 130

Supplies Needed = 600-700 2x4 Wood Boards, 3,000-4,000 Nails

Total Costs Incl. Labour = $3,000 USD (9-11 Million UGX)

What
Photocopier, Printer, Scanner

Why
A massive need for Angel’s Care is current, useable teaching materials. This includes scholastic materials like texts, graphs, and packs to give to each student during classes. Although new textbooks are also on this list, having a Photocopying machine would be extremely useful for the staff as it has many uses. Any material that the school does have could be scanned and printed out for students to enhance the learning experience - at the moment, all material whether old or not, is shared between multiple students. Teachers also do not have the ability to show students something from an external source such as a website. If a Photocopier/Scanner/Printer were purchased it would also give the staff the ability to create reports and useful administrative materials for planning and development. This is a necessity and also a more immediate and affordable solution to buying a whole new set of textbooks.

Total Costs (Incl. Toner/Paper etc.) = $700 USD (2.5 Mil UGX)

What
Up To Date Scholastic Material

Why
The need for updated textbooks and materials is dire. Currently the school has minimal materials, and those that it has are very outdated. Often teaches need to supplement their curriculum with newer information and teach against the texts in certain cases due to the outdated information. Newer materials along with a scanner/printer will result in every child having useable materials at hand and a massive increase in learning and performance.

Amount Needed = ~1,250 books (1 Textbook/Subject for Every 3 Children in Class)

Source = www.MKPublishers.com

Total Costs = ~$7,000 USD (25 Million UGX)

What
Solar Energy System

Why
Electricity is not provided to this school. Applications have been made to run wires and poles to the school but they will take years to even be considered. Currently, a small 50W solar panel placed on top of one of the buildings is charging two 50W batteries. These batteries are taken from the charging point and hooked up to electronic devices in other buildings when needed. This system is obviously limiting and doesn’t allow for simultaneous charging or powering of any larger devices. Gas generators are a possibility but they are too are expensive to both run and maintain with gas prices. The staff also have a very eco-friendly mindset and so a gas generator is the absolute worst case scenario. The staff also had the idea of generating power for nearby village houses and huts. The energy could be sold to people in the community for very affordable rates both helping the community and also providing revenue for the school. Also, as Angel’s expands and acquires larger electronic devices like computers, TV’s, printers, etc… a reliable power source will be required for day to day operations. A solar energy system would be the absolute most affordable, environmentally friendly, sustainable and entrepreneurial choice for Angel’s Care.

System Size Needed = 1kw - 2kw (To be determined)

Total Costs (Incl. Installation) = $5,000 - $10,000 USD (10 Mil - 20 Mil UGX)

What
Borehole/Shallow Well Water Source

Why
Water is a massive issue for Angel’s Care. Currently there are several rainwater tanks on the grounds which were donated by H.U.G.S. and which Angel’s are extremely grateful for, but a more reliable source is now required due to the growth of the school. There are two main issues with rain water tanks - drought, and stagnation. If water is still and not constantly moving, it becomes prone to bacterial growth which when consumed can lead to sickness. Rainwater tanks are extremely useful as a non-consumable water source, but now that Angel’s has almost a thousand students, volume has also become an issue. There are chemicals and processes that can be applied to the water to sanitize it, but the best solution is to dig a shallow well or borehole. The water produced by either of these will be much cleaner and readily available. This also provides a reliable, clean water source for the surrounding refugees and residents which is very much needed.
Total Costs = $9,300 USD (33 Million UGX)

What
New Classroom Building w/ Teachers Office

Why
As mentioned previously, one of the most difficult situations is class room size and over packing. The reason why Angel’s Care has the highest academic scoring in the settlement is due to it’s small student to teacher ratio. This ratio is now being threatened by two things - lack of funds to hire more teachers, and physically not having enough space to put classes. To combat this before it ruins Angel’s academic standing, a new classroom with larger student occupation is needed. The planned building will have many purposes. Firstly, it will have much larger classrooms to allow students more space to work and store things. Secondly, it will have attached at the end an administration office for staff that will hopefully/eventually contain computers, printers, etc. for staff to work on things, and it will also contain a staff room for potential meetings, and breaks. This building will be a simple, single story structure with 4 classrooms and the teachers office section. With more funds additional classrooms will hopefully/eventually be added onto the structure as the amount of students inevitably increase.
Total Costs = $42,000 USD (150 Mil UGX)

What
Renovations to Current Buildings

Why
The current buildings on the premises need some work. A fair amount of the building walls have not yet been plastered and they still have dirt floors. Plastering the walls and pouring concrete floors are very basic needs but still have not been completed. The renovations will most likely be broken into two phases: Phase 1 being the community hall, and Phase 2 being the classrooms and other buildings. Angel’s Care would like to work with volunteers and donors to complete these renovations. If funds come in for the materials, a program will be set up so that any volunteers interested in learning and experiencing Angel’s Care School and the settlement first hand will be welcome to come take part in the labour required to plaster walls and complete the concrete flooring. For more details on how to get involved please read the proposed volunteer program. The staff and students at Angel’s Care absolutely love visitors and would welcome anyone willing to help into this beautiful, safe environment.
Total Costs = $7,000 USD (25 Mil UGX)

What
Nursery Games and Toys

Why
An area that is often overlooked in refugee settlement schools is the nursery. Along with proper care Angel’s is devoted to providing games and activities to children in nursery. The children range up to six years old, and unfortunately it can be tough finding age-appropriate activities for them. Angel’s Care has made it one of their priorities to ask for funds to purchase age appropriate toys and games for the nursery. Toys such as child-safe puzzles and games are needed for the 60+ children that are currently in the nursery. Although it may not seem like such a big need in comparison to others, it is very important to the staff of Angel’s Care as they are constantly trying to build the foundation of their school on the needs of the children and therefore has earned a place as one of the most imporant needs currently for the school.
Total Units = 60-70 small items that are appropriate for 2-6 year olds.

Total Costs = $200 USD (715,000 UGX)

What
Grinding Mill Machinery

Why
This machinery is a big piece in the sustainable agriculture system that Angel’s Care envisions. This would allow Angel’s Care to not only source their cobs for charcoal briquette from their own crops but also use the community as a source. The machinery separates the mais/corn from the cob and refines it further for use as a porridge-type food which is a staple in the settlement. The remaining cob which is left over would then be carbonated and refined into charcoal briquette for sale. The residents would benefit from the affordable separation/refining service and the school would benefit from the additional cobs plus the revenue that the separation/refining service brings in.
Total Cost = $9,300 USD (33 Mil UGX)

____________________________________________________________

What
Charcoal Briquette Machinery

Why
As previously mentioned, Angel’s Care has several projects around the settlement which generate revenue for the school and community. One of the most promising projects is it’s charcoal briquette production. Charcoal briquettes are produced for use and sale to use as a burning agents for cooking. They are made from the off shoots of mais cob (corn cob) that aren’t used for consumption.

Currently, the UNHCR is their largest customer, but the market around the settlement has just recently opened up which enables the free trade of charcoal briquette. Angel’s Care is currently one of the largest producers of briquettes in the settlement, but they are sub-contracting the refining process to someone else who owns the machinery which massively decreases revenue and control. The plan is to raise funds to purchase the refining machinery in order to decrease overheads and also be able to sell to the public around the settlement. Having these machines would be a massive plus in the sustainability project, and of course would massively benefit the school, students, staff, and entire community around Angel’s Care.
Total Costs = $4,200 (15 Mill UGX)

A good friend of mine is doing some amazing work to help children in a refugee camp in Uganda. They are currently trying to place a floor where the children attend school to get rid of Jitters, a parasite that is eating away at the kids' feet. (Google it if you dare but I must genuinely warn you that the results can be really disturbing) The children are so scared and in so much pain from the Jitters that they've stopped going to school. Help if you can. Cheers.
