As a Registered Nurse and Paramedic, I have had the opportunity to undertake volunteer humanitarian work over the years, including disaster responses to the Phillipines post Typhoon Hyan, and the recent earthqauke in Nepal. Last year I spent time in Thessaloniki Greece volunteering for Medicines du Monde, where I saw first hand the effects on local people that had suffered due to strict austerity measures placed upon them. Pensioners left homeless and unable to buy their medication, children unable to access vaccinations/baby formula and parents unable to afford the basics.
Greece is currently in political and financial turmoil, its own people are dealing with a crisis. The influx of Asylum seekers and refugees arriving from neighbouring countries, into a country already struggling, has meant that the humanitarian crisis has now extended to include this additional population.
I have been in contact with the team in Lesvos island, which has currently received thousands of refugees. There is a desperate need for medical equipment, supplies and volunteers. The situation on Lesvos and surrounding islands is dire.
Your donation today will go towards purchasing medical supplies and travel expenses so I can assist the team in this humanitarian crisis on Lesvos island. Medecine du Monde is a trustworthy organisation and I have seen the great work they have done. You will be able to follow my progress and reports on Facebook. With gratitude for your support, Helen Zahos
